wolfgang_gressmann
Hello fellow travel photogs. I am planning a trip to the Sagar Mela festival in India, on 12 - 14 January 2004, on Sagar island approx. 150 km south of Calcutta. I would appreciate any advice you can give, incl. how to get there. I am planning to do B&W, with two Leica M and 35 and 90mm to keep things simple. Thank you all very much in advance! preston_merchant
How to get there? http://www.indiaprofile.com/pilgrimage/gangasagarmela.htm "It is indeed a tough journey. A few days in packed buses and trains bring the pilgrims to Calcutta. From there, again a long bus journey to ferry ghats or jetty in Sunderbans area, followed by crossing the tidal river stretching for miles across. The last leg involves either walking or traveling by a local bus up to 30 kilometres depending on the location of embarkation point." I'm sure you'll be able to find transport. Have you ever been to India before? Cheers, Preston
wolfgang_gressmann
Thank you, Preston, for the link. Yes I was in India a couple of times before. I was just wondering whether another forum member was as the festival before, and what is the best way to travel from Calcutta to the site, best photo locations on the island, etc. Anyway, I appreciate a lot the link you sent me. Sounds interesting, doesn't it?
preston_merchant
Usually for these big festivals, there are extra trains, plenty of buses, etc. I'm sure you will have no problem getting from Calcutta to the site. Sounds like fun! Didn't Don McCullin photograph this festival? Cheers, Preston
preston_merchant
Wolfgang, if you are interested, and to answer my own question, Don McCullin has some B&W photos of the Sagar Mela in his book "India."
