sundaram_venkatachalam1
Has anyone carried the Gitzo G1227 CF tripod as a carry-on baggage for US domestic travel. I have a G1227 with Kirk BH-1 ball head and was wondering what other members experience was in dealing with security and airlines folks? nicholas_fiduccia
Sundaram, I carried my 1227 with Linhoff ballhead several times on a plane without incident.
sundaram_venkatachalam1
Thanks. Did you put the tripod in your carry-on or check it in?
wildpicture
Why would you take it as carry on? You can put it in a suitable hardcase suitcase. I can imagine you don't want to put an expensive big lens in a suitcase. But why not a tripod?
greglyon
Last time I carried on a big lens and CF tripod (hakuba instead of Gitzo) I got stopped...because of the tiny mustache scissors I'd brought in my overnight bag :) They don't seem to mind photo-stuff at all. Boots, on the other hand...
alex_lofquist
Before 9-11 I would carry my G1228 (the 4-section model), but pull out the center post and reverse it with the head on, then wrap it in some dense clothing. This made it easier to fit my carry-on and it wasn't a security issue then. Carbon fiber can shatter if impacted on the side, so I might even consider a heavy-duty shipping tube today. brian walsh
I can't comment on travel with the 1227but I do travel with the slightly smaller 1127, which replaced my 1128. I fly once or twice each week with the 1127 as part of my carry-on baggage, and I haven't had any problem on US domestic flights since TSA took over airport security. I've seen a an elderly blind woman and her guide dog searched searched extensively (the harness apparently has a metal insert), and I wouldn't try to carry nail clippers on board, but my carbon fiber tripod and a Leica large ball and socket head haven't caused any difficulties. mbeebee
I've traveled in the US several times with this exact combination as carry-on (since Sept. 11), and had no trouble -- nobody even looked twice. Martin
