stephen_w.
I've got a 1956 50 Elmar, 2.8 collapsible, my first. What is the material of the seal? Should the barrel be lubed?
crackers_.
Much depends on the fitting whose supplier changed in late 1955. The BX style fitting should get the more modern high shear/compressibility EXXMOB 05/GF/749B whereas the lenses equipped with the larger throated, square base fitting get any equivalent of SHELL HGb/29/nJ3 with Teflon. Either way, at 75-92 psi, inject just enough to squeeze out an even bead at the front and rear of the mount/barrel joint.

davidv1
Steve, Sherry K. would be happy to offer advice, either via email or phone. Her rate for complete lens service is $75 (my collapsible 'cron is there right now). Regards, David
crackers_.
Ohhhh. One of those Elmars. They have a recess in the throat - maybe a quarter inch wide and .040" deep that holds a strip of felt. The drier the strip, the less barrel scratching it will do. Give it nothing - it's not a POGO stick.
l. f.miller
Steve, the material of the seal is a felt ring set into a groove in the focusing unit. I believe it would be unwise to lube it. If the felt is chewed up or has been crushed to the extent that it no longer holds the barrel firmly, or you hear scraping noises when you extend or collapse the barrel, the felt probably needs to be replaced. I have heard of people using the felt from film cannisters as Leica replacement felt may be hard to find. --Lee
stephen_shepherd
The film cannister felt (actually a kind of synthetic velvet ribbon) is ideal. Just make sure to glue it securely with contact cement and let it set before trying to re-insert the lens barrel; otherwise it will bunch up and you'll have to start over. jay_.
The official word from the LFSA is K-Y or Jergen's.
bobflores
I bought the "modern" 50mm 2.8 lense in chrome a couple of years back and the "official" word in the manual that came with the lens was to apply "Vaseline or a similar petroleum jelly" should the collapsing action become stiff.
