dennis_couvillion
I took the newly-acquired 35mm f3.5 Summaron for a walk in the French Quarter this morning and shot two rolls of HP5+. Here's what I think about the lens: First, I like the goggle-eyes, which must mean I am the only person on earth who does. I like short lenses because they seem to make the camera fell better balanced. This is a short lens, and while the goggles do add weight they also seem to add to the feeling of balance and solidity to the camera. While the goggles darken the viewfinder a bit, at f3.5 this is definitely just a daylight lens anyway and the slight darkening was no problem in the daylight. Optically, it's not as sharp as what I am accumstomed to, but I like the results. The images are very creamy and smooth. Maybe this is the famous Leica glow; or, maybe it's just the fungus growung inside the lens. If it's the fungus, I may send the lens to Sherry to see if she can add some more fungus. ;>) Here are seven images I took to give you an idea of the kind of images this lens produces. jerry_freeman1
For a minute, I thought you we going to post the entire two rolls! :) Interesting and worthwhile contribution...jf
dennis_couvillion
The scan of #2 is showing a lot of articafts on my monitor, and #3 is a little fuzzy, too. BTW, in #3 the sidewalk had just been hosed down (this was at about 8:30 AM), in case anyone was wondering why it looked like it was raining in only one photo. crackers_.
Sure that's a blacksmith shop? I think that's a Kodak logo behind the shutter.
dennis_couvillion
One thing I forgot to mention...the lens flares anywhere near sunlight. I have a few shots where the sunlight was coming in through the lower branches of trees and the flare was pretty bad even though I was using a lens hood. kaiblanke
Hello Dennis,
I am quite astonished about your results. A while ago I did a 'real life' comparison shooting of all semi wide angles I had, which were the 3.5/3.5 Elmar (coated), an M39 3.5/35 Summaron, an Summaron-M 2.8/35 and a 40/2 M-Rokkor. The Rokkor was the nicest, no doubt, but all other three were quite good as well. I did not have major problems with flare nore with missing contrast; it looks like your Summaron is in need of a cleaning. It is a nice daylight lens, that still delivers very good results.
Regards - Kai
