donpaulson
I would like to purchase the 1Ds, if and when it becomes a little more affordable. I've read that there is a degree of light fall off around the edges of the sensor when using a wide lens such as the 17mm. This is because the sensor is more sensitive to light stiking it at a right angle. Apparently the light strikes the edges of the sensor at an angle when using wide lenses. Has anyone experienced this? If so is it a serious problem, or can it be easily corrected in Photoshop?
bleck
Yes, it happens. No, it's not that big of a deal. There's some writeup about it somewhere on Luminous Landscape if you care to look. To paraphrase, his conclusion is that you won't notice anything different in prints when compared with wide-angle shots done on 35mm film.
donpaulson
Great! Thanks. That's what I wanted to hear. I'll check out that article.
steve_dunn2
Lens manufacturers are aware of this issue. Some of the third parties have product lines designed as being designed for digital, and at least some of these include optical designs that try to reduce this. I believe I read somewhere that some of Canon's recent lenses are also designed with this in mind.
PuppyDigs
Hmm, my EF 24 2.8 exhibits a little light fall off on the edges on my full frame 35mm bodies (EOS 3 & Elan 7E) when shot wide open. However, I don't see any at all with my EOS 10D. Perhaps the "light striking the edges of the sensor at an angle" with wide lenses isn't an issue due to the 1.6x cropping factor. Or, maybe 24mm ain't wide enough to matter. Sometimes the light’s all shining on me. Other times I can barely see. - Robert Hunter
jim_larson1
Puppy face: Or (to paraphrase), since the 10D sensor is physically smaller than the 1Ds sensor it is not an issue since the the light fall off is in areas where there is no sensor.. .
