vajra_alsop
Just got an FM2 in very nice condition. Experienced a slight whirring/ticking noise from inside the camera--very faint and on a rare occasion such as a long exposure on the Bulb setting. is this a problem or just a normal occurrence? thank you very much for a response
al_tan
Hi Vajra, I didn't encounter anything like this when I had my FM2n. But it sounds like it's coming from the self-timer. Did you inadvertently touched/moved the self-timer lever? Cheers, Al
vajra_alsop
thanks Al, its not the timer, its a very faint whirring noise inside--very strange considering its mint, two weeks of use... thanks for the response. Anyone else?
vajra_alsop
Al, it certainly could be the timer, the noise is the same, but i don't think i've been tripping it myself. it seems to just go off sometimes. cheers.
david_harrison3
Hi Vajra A little more info would help- how does the whirring noise differ from the normal whirring of the gears etc audible at longer shutter speeds? Is the noise random/intermittent or can you make it happen by doing something in particular? I,ve been using FM2s for years but don't think I've come across this before! mskovacs
If you cycle upwards from bulb with shutter speeds, do you hear it up to a certain speed? From your description, it sounds like the slow speed escapement to me, completely normal. Mechanical shutters usually have 2 or more gear trains, one for high speeds and one for low. michael_devoue
The FM2 should make a distinct sound at 1 sec., unlike the FE(2), whick uses an electronically timed shutter vs. mechanical. It's the slow speed escapement as a previous responder contributed. At bulb, however, short of the slight reverberations of the "release" energy doing their thing, the FM2 shouldn't make noise. Does it really do it on bulb? If so, get it checked out- that's odd.
