shallowallet
I just acquired a used filter, it was supporse to be a UV filter. However, when I got it, it only says: GERMANY, E. Leitz N.Y. SL. Is it UV or Skylight? Thanks.
mark-j
Martin: Look at the filter against a plain white background. A pinkish cast would indicate a skylight filter, and clear or negligible color shift would be a UV filter. Cheers. Mark J.
stephen hazelton
Perhaps SL = SkyLight?
shallowallet
Yeah, I guess it is skylight, it is a little pinkish. Should I use this as a protective filter? I checked B&H web site and could not find the differences of UV and skylight. How much light it reduces? Thanks again.
al_kaplan1
It reduces light a bit more than a UV, perhaps 1/10 stop, not enough to notice. A through the lens meter will compensate for it. If you don't read through the lens you really won't notice a difference anyway.
scott_k.
It should be fine as a protective filter.
mark-j
Martin: For prints or B&W, it will work fine. If you shoot slides, it will tend to "warm" the pictures a little. Cheers
albert knapp md
Just make sure it is clean and not scratched. The latter can be problematic especially in contre-jour situations.
