compendium shade for Calumet 8x10??

Hi guys. I've been having a major bellows flare problem with a

photo I've been trying to get. The subject is in deep shade behind

a small 1-story building, but there's bright daylight coming from

all around, including almost directly into the lens from just above

the building (barely out of the image, but probably within the

lens's image circle). My film is getting fogged terribly by the

flare, so I'm considering trying out a compendium lens hood, if

there's such a thing for the Calumet C-1. It needs to be a pretty

good one that will really cover up the image circle-- I don't think

a simple lens hood device would work. Does anyone have a suggestion?

The Shen Hao lens hood could be adapted to fit on an 8x10 with little trouble, but it would most likely need to be attached to the lens board with the provided metal plate. It will go on a lens with a front element size of up to 4". I tried mine on the "new" 8X10 I have and it would have worked, but the 300mm Symmar-s has a frot element which is larger than 4" (107mm, unfortunately).

To get by for just a single shot, you might try an oatmeal container with the inside painted black. Cut to size for "perfect" fit. Crude, but it would work and is cheap. Otherwise, a real shade is necessary, but expect to spend a few $ to get one.

Lindahl makes a line of compendium/filter holder/vignetters. They will usually attach to your lens by the filter threads. Sold by Calumet. Calumet also made a compendium for their old-style 4x5s, it attached by a clamp to the front standard. They should be available on the used market. And I'm sure that their current camera lines (Cambo) have a compendium available too, if you want to get spendy. Any of those will work better than an oatmeal box.

There is always the Lee system which will work with any camera since it fits on the

lens. For the most part, I have been really happy with it, although it isn't cheap, and

has some problems with polarizing filters.

There were compendium hoods made for the C-1. I couldn't tell you where to get

one, but I have seen them around.
