john_nicoll
I am thinking of buying the Canon EOS 300D Rebel digital camera. I have looked at the Canon website and other sites at the specs but I can't seem to find information aout wether I can shoot digital pictures with a black and white effect. Does anyone know what effects the EOS 300D Rebel has? And if you don't know would you know where I can get this information quickly? Thanks for any help you can give! J. denisbergeron
Just use a software to convert to B/W !
NK Guy
Most digital SLR cameras such as the 300D do not have post-processing features such as black and white mode or fake sepiatone mode or whatever built in. Such features are common with consumer-level point and shoots but not D-SLRs. If you want to achieve this effect then you would load the image into a photo processing program (eg: Adobe Photoshop Elements, Apple iPhoto, etc) and do the conversion to black and white on your computer. canon_eos_rules
No, but the 300D/Digital Rebel does come with Photoshop Elements, where you can easily make your images black & white!
jimvanson
Yes, you use a B&W compact flash card!
richard thompson www.fotoz
Split the RGB channels and select the best one, de-saturate image completely, or choose grey-scale - 3 ways to do it photoshop. I leave it to decide whether the following other answers will work : a) use a black&white filter b) get your dog to take photos c) use a b&w flash card d) view photos on a black and white monitor
mormegil
I have a follow question. I've been looking at some of the B&W Pro actions or filters on the market. One I'm looking at allows you do do Prefilter options, essentially, emulating a yellow or red filter. Does anyone have any experience shooting with a real Red or Yellow filter on the lens, then converting that in Photoshop? Is it any better, or any easier than tweaking with the channels to achieve filter effects? Is it any better than doing it in these B&W Pro Actions or Filter sets? ben_chernivsky
You can get plenty good black and white photos with digital. I use photoshop. Most of the time I just convert to black and white (grayscale), then mess around with duotone settings (using 2, 3, or 4 different tones) to produce a very nice "black and white" digital photo:
All taken with a canon D30 digital eos slr:
greyscale example:
http://www.photo.net/photodb/folder?folder_id=336270
duotone example:
http://www.photo.net/photo/1770829
black and white digital:
http://www.photo.net/photodb/folder?folder_id=336270
I don't know if you will notice the difference right away, but once you start messing around with it, then you'll get the hang of it!
Good luck!
Ben

chris_patrick
Mr. Thompson, Great advice. I had my dog take some pictures and they are some of the best black and whites ive seen. Its like, Rover only sees in black and white. Its amazing. he could use a little training on composition and subject matter (always taking pictures of his bitches you know), but overall a doggone good photogrpher. b_hart
Why do people with more experience feel the need to give sarcastic answers to someone rather then offer help and share what information they have? Isn't that the purpose of having a forum? I would love to see some of the photographs taken by some of the snobs that trash neophytes on the forums. I bet a lot of them are mediocre!
