wyverndude
I am hoping to find a camera club in the Bay Area (Silicon Valley) that is amenable to Large Format. I have found quite a few clubs in this area, but they make a point of emphasizing that they 'focus on images, not the equipment'... I am currently specifically wanting to talk about equipment. I'm self- taught from what I've read on internet and a book or magazine or two; and I've never seen a view camera being used -besides what I do with mine. What I'm doing seems to mostly be working, but I'm wondering if I'm doing anything weird or developing bad habits. I have yet to attend any meetings of any of the clubs local to me; maybe I misinterpreted what they say on their websites? Or maybe I haven't found the right websites yet. greg_prior
If you don't find anything, let's start one. I'm interested in the same thing. There is a Yahoo group of SF bay area LF users. You might check there. I'm going to the Betterlight user's conference in San Carlos tomorrow & Friday (9th and 10th). There will be lots of LF stuff there if you like (or don't mind) the use of scan backs on LF. You can find them at www.betterlight.com or me at www.eleganteditions.com -- Greg
ralph_barker
Several of us tried to get a SF Bay Area group going a few months back. The first few meetings were fairly well-attended, but participation waned, presumably due to schedule conflicts. The Yahoo group is still functional, however, so you might try posting an inquiry.
shawn_kielty1
I'd be interested in a club -- if their primary activity was shooting pictures - it seems to me that most of the activities of clubs are talking, voting, membership, and managing it. An informal day or weekend of shooting with other people of like mind would be much more interesting to me. I'd be willing to volunteer in some way to that end. wyverndude
Thanks, all! I followed some of your leads and replied directly to a few of you... but overall it seems that our specialty is far more specialized than I had thought. I get the impression that a LF-specific camera club in the Bay Area would draw no more than ... three or four ... on a *good* night; but just to find an otherwise P&S club with ONE LF enthusiast/user would be a start... A class would also suit my purposes, but with the dearth of clubs, I've no hope of finding any classes. I'm just interested in finding out how *normal* LF photogs go about doing their thing. So ... perhaps I should rephrase the question... I'll start a new post.
tim obrien
How do we go about doing our thing? Lonely, I tell ya, lonely. Someday I will meet another out on the trail with a Speed Graphic just like mine, heavy tripod just like mine, a Luna Pro just like mine, lots of film holders just like mine and I 'll know... I've found the perfect reflecting pool. tim in san jose
shawn_kielty1
Hi again -- my recollection tells me that Cal State Hayward has a class that includes or focuses on LF in their catalog -- whether it's offered is another thing. s
