russell_dean
I took my camera out and installed the batteries and for some reason my camera is not autofocusing. I have checked the lens m/ma switch, the camera's focusing mode selector switch, checked the batteries to insure they were installed right. What gives? Oh, and for those who might pop the question, I did turn on the camera switch! HA, HA! Anyone with any ideas please respond. Thanks.
chuck
There is a custom function that remove the AF triggering function from the shutter button and moves it to AF-On button. Try the AF-On button to see if you set this custom function by accident.
Rick Waller
You indicate that you checked to be certain that the batts were installed correctly. Did you check to see if they were any good??
russell_dean
Well, I found out the problem. You must have film in the camera I guess if you want to turn on the camera and use autofocus on the lens. It says no where in the owners manual that you have to have film in the camera for the autofocus to work! Go figure.

john_fisher
Mine is loaded or I'd check, but I think you just reset the ISO to something other than DX if there's no film in it. john
david_h._hartman
What John Fisher says makes sense. I dont recall ever having a problem with AF not working without film in the camera. I never use DX so Id never know. There is film in my F5 now so I cant check.
hal_bissinger
The F5 will AF just fine when there is no film loaded. Sorry, but that isn't the reason. <p>I did have a problem with the AF about a year ago. Sent it back to Nikon to have the CCD cleaned. Yes, it apparently uses a CCD for the AF. hugh stevens
Russell and All I have had no problems getting my F5 to autofocus without film present in the camera body. I also set the ISO on the camera and rarely, if ever, use the DX function. If your custom settings are for the shutter release depressed 1/2 way down to start autofocus, it should work. If not, set your ISO to anything but DX and try again. If it still doesn't AF, call nikon tech.
