danny_spry
I have a freckley faced red headed friend I am photographing Saturday. What filter causes the freckles to stand out more? Thanks
dougmiles
Hi Danny -- Since freckles are darker than than the surrounding skin, to make them stand out more you'd want to darken them further. To darken a certain color, you apply a filter on the opposite side of the color wheel, or nearly so. What color are freckles? Red/brown? Call that a desaturated yellow (tan)? If so, opposite yellow is blue, so try a light-blue 82A filter... That will darken the red hair as well and emphasize skin textures, for a "rugged, manly" look! bob_lazzarini
Danny, On the opposite course of action, if it's your girl friend who hates freckles, experiment with different yellow or red filters, going on the basis you are using b+w film. gauthier
Yes, a blue (80A or, even better, 47) filter would enhance the brown-orange freckles, while an orange (15) filter would underplay them.
danny_spry
Thanks. I already have a blue cokin filter to cool tungstun lights. I'll give that a try.
danny_spry
tried the blue filter and the effect was to strong but after I was done I tought it might have been interestin to over expose with the blue filter. I'll have to try again.
gauthier
If the effect of the 80A is too strong, try a 82A or B - these subtle cooling filters are nowhere as blue as the 80A, not to mention the 47.
ole_tjugen
Try green or yellow-green. Gives great skin tones, and tend to emphasize freckles, scars and pimples... Or use orthochromatic film!
