mickeysimpson
OK, to start with this image is a 7-layer composite of shots from my Canon EOS 5D MIII and my Samsung smartphone.. The photos were taken at my home with collected leaves I have collected as well as shot at Monmouth Battlefield, Manalapan, New Jersey. 3 1
Mark Keefer
Micky, please give us some detail on this. Is it a mix of 5D and Samsung images? My Galaxy S21plus went swimming with me a week ago. So my replacement is a S24Ultra. I'll be paying this off over two years. Sigh. Cheers, Mark

My Galaxy S21plus went swimming with me a week ago. So my replacement is a S24Ultra. I'll be paying this off over two years. Sigh. Hi Mark. OMG, I have the Samsung Ultra S21 and have not let it go swimming. I only use the US21 for photos when I do not have my 5DMII. I’m 75 now and do not always carry my 5DMIII. So, you asked for it, Mark, and I’ll try to keep my explanation as short and accurate as possible. I started by driving around my town collecting autumn leaves, seeds, cones. Then I created several arrangements on a table by moving everything around to get what I thought made interesting arrays of shapes, textures, shadows, and colors. This gave me the RAW base images that I created with my 5DMIII in 2020. Last year I took photos, JPGs, of individual leaves and small groups of leaves with my US21 during several walks through Monmouth Battlefield Park. While these photos were OK, I did not consider them to be keepers on their own. I contemplated how to best process and use these new images and decided to go for a 3-dimensional look built upon my 2020 base. I worked with the 2023 leaves rotating and tilting them to see what I could create. I tried different leaves and eventually picked the 3 leaves that you see in the version I posted. I stacked these as new layers over the 2020 base image. I moved the 2023 leaves around so that they appeared to be at different heights above the base. I then copied each individual 2023 leaf creating new layers in the composite image. I then removed all color from the new layers and reduced the layer opacity to achieve the look of a shadow. I also blurred the 2020 base image to create bokeh and give the appearance of distance between the base and the new layers. The last step was to stack the layers correctly and move everything around until I got the 3 dimensional appearance that I was seeking. I did not document all these steps as they took place over time, and I made up to 5 versions. I may create new versions including bolder mixes of color and B&W. Am I OK with this mix of Canon images? Best regards, Mick

Best regards, Mick As I recall I added the base layer to the new image file. The sequence above does not make that clear.

Nice explanation, Mickeysimpson. I am so out of practice with Photoshop that I would need a step-by-step list to accomplish that! It was an interesting composition.

I may be an old fart at 75, but I still want to learn new techniques. My health limits my ability to get out for a photoshoot as I need to beg for a ride.

Kind of a Tom Cruise "Risky Business" U-Boat Captain moment. Or perhaps a Sea Hunt Lloyd Bridges with a Galaxy s21plus. lol. The s21plus is not water proof. sigh. Expensive mistake on my part. You may have been on a Sea Hunt, or fancied yourself as a U-Boat captain, but I can clearly see that your Risky Business did not take you 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

I'm sure that's what inspired me to learn how to swim and then take SCUBA lessons.
