Leica wide angle lenses on EOS 1

I bought an Leica to Canon lens adapter through B&H to use an old Leica 135mm lens

that I had. I know that many wide angle lenses will protrude inwards and may

interfere with the mirror when it flips up. I was wondering if anyone has seen a list of

what Leica lenses will fit without this problem on a Canon EOS 1.

Hi Jim,

Please check out Andrew Nemeth's Leica FAQ site:

http://www.nemeng.com/leica/002f.shtml

Although it deals mostly with using Leica R lenses on Canon digital cameras

(some with smaller return mirrors than full frame film cameras) there is also

mention of a number of Leica lenses which can / cannot be used on film

bodies. From personal experience, the 19mm cannot be used on film bodies

(but can be used on a D60 or 10D digital) and the latest 50 Summilux R can

be used on both film and digital (despite net reports that it can't be used on

film cameras). The 28Elmarit R and the 35 Summicron R can also be used on

both digital and film bodies. Hope this helps

Howard

Yakim,

I already had an old 135mm lens that was given to me. When I bought the adapter

for it, and found how well it worked, it got me thinking about some of the Leica

wides. It sounds like there are a fair amount of lenses that will fit.

Thanks to everyone for the replies and links!

Jim

See Stephen Gandy's http://www.cameraquest.com/adapreos.htm for the adapter that allows Leica R lenses on the EOS. He claims you can get aperture-priority exposure. Based my use of a Leica-to-Canon adapter on a Canon F-1, you'd want a viewfinder screen with a good split image or microprism focusing aid for situations in which you would focus. I'd think your EOS 1 would have just that. With a wide-angle, you'd use hyperfocal settings much of the time, anyway. One and two-cam Leica R lenses are getting pretty reasonable these days.
