ralphie_jones
Anyone come up with a decent solution for those nikkors that don't have extension hoods, such as the older 300/2.8, or better yet, the 400/3.5 (which I have)? I'd like to fabricate some sort of extension hood that is simple and somewhat elegant. Anyone tried something like this or maybe adapted a hood from another lens? Any stories or advice would help. can hoods for newer nikkors be adapted to older ones?
alex_lofquist
If you want elegance, try building a compendium-style hood from bellows materials and aluminum strips. The bellows gives flexibility for various focal lengths. (It would be extended more for the 400 than the 300.) There is a way to determine the desired size of a hood based on the intrusion of the hood into the object space. (It is easier to show this than to talk about it.) lex_jenkins
I'd be inclined to ask this question of a rifle silhouette shooter. Those folks take their sport seriously and many have l-o-n-g hoods made for their scopes. I suspect they have 'em custom machined 'cause I've never seen such hoods offered for sale by Leupold or other scope makers, tho' many rifle scopes are threaded for such accessories. lars
I use an HE-6 for my 400/3.5. It is attached with a piece of car tyre tubing. This allows it to be moved somewhat should I bump it against something and there will be no shock transferred to the lens.
ed farmer - mount laurel,
Gee, when I watch NFL games, I always see photographers using long lenses with what appear to be 8x10 cards rubberbanded onto the existing hood. Seems cheap and effective.
