mike_devlin
Anyone owning both of thease lenses care to share experiences with us,I'm considering the 90, but after responses to my last post I'm now once again considering the 75 Thanks
Nowhereman
This is a frequent question on this forum; if you do a search for the 75, you'll find lots of threads on this subject.
fotografz
Mike, both are excellent. If you have a 50 Lux you may find the 75 a tad close in coverage compared to the 90AA. However, if the next lens down in your kit is a 35mm, or a slower 50, I would look at the 75. The 90 is brutally sharp, and needs a Softar 1, when shooting a womans portrait if she is over the age of 20. The 75 is also crisp, but has a quality to it that favors portraits as well as very low light work like shooting concerts and interior performances. Some feel the focusing of these bigger lenses is stiff, but I prefer it that way because they have to be dead on when using them close & wide open. Personally, I use Lutzs' "Steer" on both lenses for improved speed and accuracy. The 75 is bigger and blocks a little more of the finder. The 75 also focuses closer, but reqires a longer throw from infinity to minimum focus. Choosing either lens will not be a mistake.<div></div>
cabophoto
Marc, >>The 75 is bigger and blocks a little more of the finder yes, but the picture you posted does the 75 a disfavor in this respect. In the picture it is set to the closest focusing distance, making it several mm longer. The 90 is set to infinity. fotografz
Oops, Carsten you're right. My mistake. Here they are again with focus out to maximum and hoods fully extended. Note that the 75 doesn't have a white dot indicating where the aperture is set while the 90 does. Weird.<div></div>
james_.1
OK now same as above, but with hoods retracted. ; )
david11
Mike, I use both the 75 Summilux and the 90 SAA lenses. Both are great lenses and they are different. If I had to choose between the two, I would go for the 75 Summilux, but only because I also own the 1st version 90 Elmarit lens as well. I will always have a 90; the focal length difference is significant enough to me that I need both. My suggestion is that you should borrow or lease these lenses if at all possible. Only you can decide what is best for your photography.
fotografz
Okay-Dokey James, here you go. Pretty close in hight. 75s a bit fatter, and with the hood out blocks a tad more of the viewfinder, but frankly that never bothered me all that much.<div></div>
cabophoto
Marc, >>Note that the 75 doesn't have a white dot indicating where the aperture is set while the 90 does. Weird. really weird. I just checked my 75 and it has the white dot, just as your 90. Hmmmm..... Carsten
james_.1
Very cool Marc, thanks. Now when I read about people saying the 75 lux is oh so bigger than the 90/2 AA, I can refer them to this thread.
ralph_barker
Marc - did you pay extra for the stealth-mode (no white dot) 75mm 'Lux? Mine has a white dot, making it much more noticeable in the field. Maybe I should cover the dot with a piece of black tape? (lol) Seriously, thanks for the comparisons. Gotta get a couple of Steers from Lutz - they look handy (and, cool, too).
kevin_baker___heidelberg_
Erwin Putz has just published an article on the inherent advantages of the 75 Lux with aperture dot. Results between the with dot and without dot are dramatic. I don't have the link, but if someone has it, please post...
mike dixon
My 75 has the white dot -and- somewhat-irregular narrow bands of silver around the front and rear edges of the lens hood and focusing ring. Most peculiar . . .
james_.1
Mike you better get that checked out STAT!
albert knapp md
The case of the missing dot: another Leica QC mess up. Mike, does your 75mm lens have a missing front optic as well?
fotografz
All's well, I found the white dot ...but then my cat pounced on it and ate it. Suddenly he became really focused. Spooky.
matt_sachs
hope he doesn't disappear through an aperture
raymond_tai
What a coincidence Marc. I knew people in the 70's whom told similar stories of licking white dots but the resulting focus had more of a purple haze....
