kaetheko
I have a great opportunity to visit Cape Cod in mid May following a business trip to Boston. I will be there about 3-5 days, plan to stay (on a budget)at the hostel in Eastham, might have a car, but I am accustomed to backpacking everywhere with my gear. I read the notes about the seals in November, any other recommendations would be appreciated. I shoot mostly b/w, many for handcoloring and I also do pen/ink and watercolors. I was also thinking of going to Nantucket, any recommendations there? I live in Sacramento so this is the other side of the world for me. Thanks to all. kaethe
lorraine_kaplan
Hi. You'll be staying in the most beautiful part of the cape - Eastham is in the part of the Cape that is on the national seashore. The national seashore headquarters are in Eastham. I recommend stopping in at the Visitor Center at the Salt Pond and picking up a map - my favorite spot is Fort Hill, and the Race Point area in Provincetown - the beach as well as the woods. The Beaches at the ends of the Pamet Roads in Truro have sand cliffs. If you're going in May, you won't have too many people (the biggest problem for me in season - I only go the the cape off season). You don't say how you would get around if you don't have a car - that would present major problems unless you were biking. There is a bike trail that runs thru the Eastham area that is a converted railroad bed - the "rail trail". Basically, though, you will need a car to get around. Nantucket is beautiful - one of my favorite photo locations is along the road to Madaket. BUT - Nanutcket is rapidly developing much of its open land. I always found it to be a great place to go without a car since within a short bike ride, you could get to beautiful open places, many of which now have houses on them. However it is very beautiful - you just need to work harder to get to the nice places. The local paper used to run a contest in which visitors would send in their Nantucket photos from their visits - I wanted to send them pictures of all the Keep Out signs. jay pulli
I try to get to the Cape at least once a year for some photography. While in Eastham, visit the beach below Nauset Light or hike down Coast Guard Beach where seals often sun themselves. The Audubon Center in South Wellfleet http://www.wellfleetbay.org/ also has a number of trails. You can check out some of these sites by viewing my Cape photos at http://www.elohi.com/photo/capecod/

Some good resources listed at the bottom and the photos aren't half-bad either.
alan hoelzle
May can be tough on the Cape. New England weather is always lousy, but "Spring" can be particularly dissapointing. I know this because I got my start as a proffesional landscape photograpgher during the years I spent living there. September is much better. However, if you are locked into May, I have a few suggestions, based upon my experiences with landscape work. Most important:you are useless without a car. I wouldn't even consider it. Second, Nantucket is nice, but you might get better results focusing in on a few areas and really exploring. Third, make the trip up to Provincetown, which is at it's best when the tourist hordes are not around. The Seashore is great year 'round. Stick to the coast if the vegetation is still displaying it's winter coat of brown. Check out the marshes and particulaly the tidal bars of the bayside. Particularly nice at low tide, when you can walk out for almost a mile out into the bay. Of course, no trip to the Cape is complete without stopping in at one of the many galleries that display my work! Check out Left Bank Gallery on Cove rd. in Orleans. Also, great veggie food at the whole foods store on Main st. I hope the skies are on your side. See my Cape shots and lots more at Persp
