Nikon Wednesday 2023: #33

Note: Consider keeping uploads no larger than 1600 pixels on the long side when it matters, and sticking with 1000 pixels when the image feels no pain at that resolution. On data size/compression, try to keep things under 1mb, shooting for 600kb when you can stop there. Note that this includes photos hosted off-site (at Flickr, Photobucket, your own site, etc). New to this thread? The general guidelines for these Wednesday threads are right here: https://www.photo.net/forums/topic/398109-guidelines-for-nikon-forum-wednesday-image-threadsFor now, we're sticking with 1, 2, or 3 images per week as you see fit.

Got a little retro over the weekend, and instead of some fun target shooting, went a little more medieval. Have to say, throwing axes can be very gratifying once you get the hang of it. Next time, I'll try some dangerous-looking head-on angles with axes in flight. That will involve a long lens, needless to say. A good Nikon Wednesday to all!

Very sharp, even with a teleconverter!   Were these photos taken hand-held?

Yes, all hand-held. I was surprised when I used the 500PF/TC-14EIII (maximum aperture f/8) on the Z9 and the AF worked flawlessly; on the D850, that combination was a lost cause with abysmal AF performance. The 800PF/TC-1.4x combo is at best f/9 and the Z9 AF still works - albeit perceived a tad slower.

Z9, 800PF, Z TC-1.4x

Nice!

It's a very hand-holdable combo, as-long as you can actually find the bird in the VF!

Big Bird in Flight is OK, but small warbler in a big bush can be a challenge!

...and I thought that was just me!

I've been meaning to try my Nikon 200-500mm, which was really soft after 420mm on my D850 and D500, on my Z9, but I've lent it to a friend..🙂
