Google Street View

Recommended Posts

When you see the Google Street View car heading down your street, how long before it replaces your current street view view. I assume someone has to block out all those license plates unless that's done automatically.

The notion of “privacy” is evolving quickly. If you live in a city or surrounding suburbs, you’re acutely aware that many if not most of your neighbors have security cameras pointed at passersby. Red light cameras are monitoring our cars and tollbooths are now “manned” by cameras, as are malls, grocery stores, policemen’s bodies, public transportation, etc. And, come on, do you really trust those electric eyes pointing at your family jewels in public restrooms? 😊 Go to any public event and cell phone cameras snapping random pics of crowds are everywhere. There will be a period of adaptation as well as the usual paranoia that accompanies this sort of thing. But, the genie is not only out of the bottle, the bottle’s been shattered into tiny bits of nostalgic glass which ain’t ever going to be put back together again. Thankfully, cameras are still being occasionally used to make art. As a matter of fact, I recently read about a guy turning surveillance into an art project.

The Google street view of my house in Idaho shows a car that I sold well over a year ago. So, how often the view is updated must depend on location. There is no Google street view of my cabin in Teton Valley, Idaho, although Zillo shows its location on an areal photograph, along with its estimated (off market) value. Even the unibomber would have a hard time finding a hideout now days.

Yes , even in the "failed state" in which I live , the blanket surveillance system is "state of the art" , it has not been allowed to fall by the wayside as has everything else.

I suspect that Chinese surveillance systems (which are apparently very good) , are in use.

Myself and a group of about 30 or so friends were once on Google Earth street view- the photo-sphere camera car drove past when we had all stopped at the scheduled lunch stop on an annual motorcycle ride. The faces and any license plates were blurred out. It was a moment tho- one we all kinda celebrated and had some laughs over. It sparked stories and memories of our time together. In short, it was a ton of fun.

I’m with Sam, TOO LATE.

I find a fair amount of humor in the whole “privacy” argument these days. I feel like, there’s a bank account, a car loan, a mobile phone, credit and/or debit card. You rent or own a home. Maybe theres a toll booth transponder. People have one or more government ID numbers: social security, drivers license, vehicle registrations. Maybe a passport. AND they’re posting stuff on THE INTERNET, L O F’ing L.

Peoples’ whole worlds are already, way, way exposed. We are OUT, top to bottom, side to side, front to back. And you wanna complain about cameras?

Hey man, mmm hmmm, whatever trips your trigger.

I shot the annual finale for a motorsports series at a track about 5 hours drive from my home this past weekend. On the way I tripped over a dead deer on the highway early in the morning, and almost wrecked my car. Once I got my nerves together I stopped to call the police to tell them about the carcass with a suggestion that it should get moved. The dispatcher immediately knew that I was some distance from the spot where the deer was as I had given him a milepost to find it. His description of where he thought I was within a few hundred yards. At that point I realized any concerns about privacy are pipe dreams at best.
