Nikon Wednesday 2023: #1

Note: In the interests of balancing performance and quality, the topic of image file size and dimensions as normally posted to this recurring thread is under discussion elsewhere in the Nikon forum (the topic is obvious when you look) - please check in there and comment if you have thoughts to share! That's the best place to talk about that particular topic. For now, consider keeping uploads no larger than 1600 pixels on the long side when it matters, and sticking with 1000 pixels when the image feels no pain at that resolution. On data size/compression, try to keep things under 1mb, shooting for 600kb when you can stop there. Note that this includes photos hosted off-site (at Flickr, Photobucket, your own site, etc). Are you new to this thread? The general guidelines for these Wednesday threads are right here: Guidelines for Nikon Forum Wednesday Image Threads. For now, we're sticking with 1, 2, or 3 images per week as you see fit.

A Happy New Year (and a good Nikon Wednesday) to all. Can't believe it's 2023. Spent the holiday weekend helping a friend survey and deal with the mess left behind by a substantial ice/wind storm that hit his woodsy getaway cabin and surrounding property in West Virginia. Two new tools came out of my truck: my shiny new Z9, and my latest drone from DJI. The Mavic 3 Cine is an amazing piece of flying camera equipment. In this case, we used it for the ultra mundane job of inspecting a roof, but it is a super piece of gear for stills and video from above. The Z9 and I are starting to feel more connected - still some behavioral things I have to tinker with, and the placement of some physical controls still needs me to do some mental reprogramming before they're automatic. But loving the body so far.

This diminutive aircraft's Hasselblad-built camera is remarkable.

Even if we're just checking the roof!

My friend was stuck with the more gritty job of clearing away fallen trees and brush.

Matt must be excited about 2023 with four images. He can use one from my quota this week. 🙂 And there is a Hasselblad camera on his drone? When I saw that brand name, I immediately thought about medium format.

Here is a tule elk at sunset in Point Reyes in California, Z9 + 800 PF.

I was hoping that everyone would be so burned out from the holidays that they couldn't count all the way to four. Busted! And yeah, I'm still gobsmacked by both the camera and the onboard processing (and video bit depth, etc) of that drone camera. No small part of the machine is the high end processing and onboard SSD storage. Amazing imaging tool, but also remarkable flight characteristics, object avoidance, and so much more. That technology has evolved incredibly in a short time.

And that Z9? It almost IS like shooting medium format! Whole lotta pixels and so responsive, and quick on its feet while shooting. Still just scratching the surface of that body.
