frans_waterlander
Wanted this image to look halfway between regular and pen and ink B&W. Comments are very welcome.
AlanKlein
Nice shot. May be a little busy because it is BW. Do you have a color version for comparison? Flickr gallery: https://www.flickr.com/photos/alanklein2000/albums
JDMvW
I, but that's just me, would have cropped in a bit tighter to the wheel.
frans_waterlander
Here's the color version. How's that?
AlanKlein
I think the color version is better as it distinguishes the features better and loses some of the busyness. A little more saturation would help even more. I agree with JD about a tighter crop. frans_waterlander
Thanks for the feedback, guys. I think it's mostly an issue of personal preferences. Yes, color separates better, but I really love the B&W version. Yes, cropping more would isolate the wheel better, but it might feel too boxed-in. Anyway, I'm having a blast revisiting B&W! rodeo_joe1
I agree that an almost square crop of the wheel would be compositionally more pleasing. But, sorry, the posterised look adds nothing IMHO. I'd much rather see a full range of smooth tones in B&W or colour thanks. To me the blocked shadows are especially ugly. Forgivable in a genuine silk-screen print, but as a digital effect - why? I did this just to liven up no more than a snapshot of an interesting object, And I now regret it to the point where it makes me cringe. John Seaman
I don't think the dead twigs etc in front of the wheel help the picture, especially the branch running across the bottom. I would have spent a couple of minutes getting rid of them.

Have you tried a less contrast and/or less sharpened B/W version. It can help declutter a busy scene. I've had otherwise nice shots that just doesn't make the cut because of being to busy and cluttered.
