A question about the new HC-110

Recommended Posts

Good afternoon, all. I'm planning to try some of the new version of HC-110. I plan to use Dilution E on 4x5 TXP in a Yankee Tank. With Dilution E I understand it's use and throw away. Will the number of sheets in the tank matter or is there a limit with Dilution E?

Thanks!

Maybe I should add that I think Kodak has given a conservative number.

For years I have used HC110 diluted 20ml + 1000ml (1+50) in a 4x35mm reel Nikor steel tank.

That tank holds 930ml, so that is less than 5ml developer pr. film - I have never had the impression that I exhausted the developer, new or old version.

More recently I started doing 4x5 in a Paterson 3-reel-tank with a MOD54 holder.

The Paterson tank holds around a 1000ml and the MOD54 holds 6 sheets of 4x5.

I use the same 20ml + 1000ml dilution but only develop the equivalent of 1.5 film (4 sheets of 4x5 = 1 "film").

When I look at my FP4+ negatives from either process, I see no difference in density or otherwise.

That is just my observation, your milage may vary.

For many developers, you do a little better for one roll.

For example, D76 stock is one roll (135-36 or 120) per 8oz/240ml.

For D76 1:1 it would be half that, but for one roll you can still do it, though

maybe with 10% longer time. It starts out nice and strong.

But for two successive rolls, it will be weaker at the start of the second roll.

Even so, you might get away with a 20% increase in time.

So, HC-110 (B) should do two rolls on 120 in 16oz/480ml.

Dilution E is 1:47, not so much less than B at 1:31.

I would probably add 10% to the time, but it is probably not so

far off without it.
