Sanford
Has anyone ever had Nikon install a new front lens element? The lens in question is a Nikkor 75-300 AF zoom (not the new ED version). I think these lenses can be found in mint condition for not very much money so it may not be worth it, just curious.
leif_goodwin8
No but from past experience of repairs I would expect it to cost significantly more than the cost of a used lens in mint condition.
ed farmer - mount laurel,
It really depends on the len. I could have had the front element of my 37-70f2.8 (non-D) lens replaced for about $100. But, the element is no longer in production and I have not been able to what I need on the used market.
plattro
I think it would be worthwhile if it were a >$1500 lens (ie, 28mm f/1.4, or a 300mm f/2.8, etc.), but it depends on the damage, is it is a deep scratch, or a cracked/shattered front element. For a less expensive lens, the repair could cost close to the price of a new (used) lens. How bad is it? Long-focus (telephoto) lenses of a similar f/ value often can tolerate deeper scratches on front elements than wideangles without affecting picture quality.
