zane_grey_mohrmeyer
I currently shoot with a nikon d100, which of course writes to either a microdrive or a card. i'm preparing for a two week vacation where i will undoubtedly will be able to fill up my collection of cards and microdrives, and i will not have the benefit of having a laptop to which i can download the files in order to free up digital media. is there an "interim" solution to this? a friend informed me of a device entitled a "data bank", which he described as an "on the road file depository", but i cannot find these. any assistance and/or advice would be greatly appreciated. colin_mcsweeney
Hi Zane look on ebay under elctronics or digital camera . the best deal going is a british model called "x's drive" type that into your search in ebay. If you have a problem email me and I'll look it up for you. BTW my son has a 10gb version and he is in S. America for 3 months and it's working great. I also have a 20gb version. ptucci
I haven't used one, so I can't vouch for it, but here's a link for an IMAGE TANK: http://www.image-tank.com/englisch/e_frame.html
neil
Here's a retailer that claims to sell ImageTank, X-Drive, and Digibin brands of the product: http://www.insidecomputer.com/store/imagetank/buy.html Like Peter, I can't vouch for this retailer or any of the products, since I haven't tried them. joshroot
If I wasn't so behind on everything in my life, I would have a review up on photo.net of both the Minds @ Work Mindstor unit and the SIMA Image Tank unit. Maybe this will get my ass in gear.
colin_mcsweeney
Zane I think if you get the X-drive you'll be happy with the results. And even happier with the price I think I paid US$250 for a 20Gb and it's worked great. Colin
kurt_maurer
Chalk up one for the Sima Image Bank. I paid about $130 used for my 5 gig model. I think new they are only $199. Works great in the studio. I can shoot in RAW mode all day long with only a 256M CF card. Check one out they seem to be the cheapest solution for mass storage. No fancy LCD but then again they don't cost $500 either.
derek_franks2
I've got a 20 gig super digibin from insidecomputer. It does what it claims to do. Transfers files off of your compactflash cards faster than anything else out there right now. It's a good solution for those who don't want to or can't carry a laptop with them on trips. neil
By the way, most of the current devices use USB 1.1. This means that transfer between it and your computer will be very slow. However, Tripper and a new version of the X-Drive are supposed to support "High Speed" USB 2.0. These models should transfer about 10 times faster. However, this will not affect transfer speed from the flash card to the device.
liftik
I am using an Image Tank G2, have used it a few times appears to work great, simple menu but does all that is needed. Build quality seems more solid then others I have seen. One full gig transfer to computer on usb 1.1 about 20 min., but who's in such a hurry anywhy? luluvision
I DO NOT RECOMMEND THE IMAGE TANK G2! My husband and I used it for our trip to Italy 2 weeks ago and it bugged out on us in the middle of the trip and lost all of our photos, at least 400! We had it for a few months and would take it with us on weekend trips to practice with it and make sure it worked. We bought it specifically for our trip to Italy so we wanted to make sure it worked! For some reason, while we were downloading a card, it bugged out, started showing funky letters on the screen and when we restarted it, it said there wasn't any pictures on it!! We stopped using it and was hoping they were still on there when we got home. It wasn't the case. We have tech people currently looking at it in the hopes the pictures can be recovered but we are not optimistic. This company that makes the Image Tank does not have customer service or technical support, which should have given us a clue about the product!!
