michael_r._conder
Is it completely necessary to purchase the EH-5 AC adapter in order to clean the D100 CCD? Couldn't I just turn it to bulb and keep the shutter up? The adapter is like $75 on B&H.
yossi_gofman
There is no Bulb seting on the D100.
ShunCheung
Of course there is the B shutter setting in the D100. I have used it.
hique
What this adapter does to make it cost $75. Can anyone explain how it works?
michael_r._conder
It's Just an AC power adapter, but when it is plugged into the D100 it allows you to lock up the mirror so you can clean the low-pass filter in front of the CCD. I just want to know if it will hurt the camera to turn it to bulb and hold the shutter up while I clean it. Will it hurt the CCD to make such a long exposure? ilkka_nissila
I think it's not a very good idea to ask this kind of thing in the internet. Ask a Nikon serviceman for the official story and their advice. I think the adapter is to make sure that you don't accidentally get the shutter damaged by your cleaning gear as the batteries run out. hique
Can this work as a mirror lockup device for my macro work? That would be nice...
craig_bridge
$75 for an EH-5 is cheap compared to replacing a shutter or worse. A fully charged battery in a grip with a MC-30 locking cable release with bulb exposure can be used if you are just going to use a bulb type blower and stay well in front of the shutter, but doing anything more even with the EH-5 and custom setting is asking for grief (either lots of time or costly repair or both). michael_vantyne
The main reason for using the AC Adapter as opposed to just setting a long shutter time is that in "CCD Cleaning" mode the CCD is not charged. The mirror is up, but the CCD is not "on", so it will not attract nearly as much dust. Of course, you also don't run the risk of the mirror slamming down onto your cleaning tools.
