adf1
Hello, Just got a Data Bank FN from a broken F1-New. The door seems to fit on the F1 OLD, but there's a small difference between both backdoors. The F1 old is straight on all sides of the rectangular shape, while the F1-New door has a slight leveled line at the center. Please see the image (F1-New). Has anyone used one of those on the old F1? I'm thinking on trying to adapt it. Has anyone here done so? Thanks in advance for any hint or idea you like to share. Ad
jim_bielecki1
The "bump up" on the Data back FN means the back won't properly fit if put on an original F-1. The hinges may be the same, but the back won't seal if installed on an original F-1.
adf1
It's actually a "bump down" (the above picture is upside down) to be correct. And the fact that it won't seal just cause of it only means is possibly to adapt. More to follow! (I was hoping someone had already some experience doing so)
mwmcbroom
Given that it's a "bump down" it seems to be at least possible -- if you're good at metal reworking I would think. BTW, here's one with no bottom bump but if you look closely it does have a dip in the top, which will complicate things: http://www.rockycameras.com/ekmps/shops/rockcameras/images/-f1n-canon-data-back-fn-for-f1n-f-1n-camera-cased-nice-39.99-51046-p.jpg Also, during my google search, I've discovered that the back controls portion is the same for the back F, FN, and A. So it isn't really gonna matter if you install the FN back. You can trade out the year wheel from another back, but the most recent year wheel I've seen expired in 1993. So what's the point/? Why bother, unless the year isn't important?
adf1
Yes, the year will be marked with the Roman letters... VII for 17 in my case. And you are right, this adaptation will mean metal work. But I will wait a couple of weeks, there's an F1-New on auction that I might get. Tx!
mwmcbroom
If it were me, I'd look for an F back. If its numerals are too low for you, you can pick up A backs for cheap. I have one -- somewhere -- I'd take ten bucks for. Includes the case too.
adf1
Sounds good, but I will be in Switzerland... perhaps it will make sense if you have some extra gear you like to see go. Don't hesitate to send me and email or private message if you think is possible to ship abroad. Else many thanks for your offer and help here on this thread. mwmcbroom
Well, I'll have to find it first. I'm not sure where it is. We moved recently and it's still in an unpacked box.l But they are quire common and I wouldn't be surprised if you're able to find one in the $10 range. steven_endo
I've been trying to search for an answer and have been unsuccessful so far but, even if you could physically mount it after modifying, will it even work? On the original F-1, the Data Back F uses a PC cord connector to plug into the camera's flash port but it appears the Data Back FN has an internal connection. Although, it does look like the Data Back FN has its own shutter button with which you could manually imprint the data before or after taking the picture...
