personal photos
I am looking at purchasing a sigma 400mm f5.6 and the one I looked at did not work with my 7d although it works with my maxxum 7. The strange thing is that the 400mm will work with my 7d if I put my Tamron 2x converter on. Can anyone explain this?

jamesdak
Strange, which version of the 400mm was it. I have a Sigma 400mm f/5.6 APO with the ZEN covering. It is black with a built in lens hood and has a dull, rubbery feeling finish. Mine works on both my Maxxum 7 bodies and my 7D. The only problem I have is that the len's focus lock button does not activate the camera's DOF preview when I have the body programmed as such. Other than that all functions work fine with the two bodies. I bought this lens sometime in the early 90s and it was new to the market then.

greg_heil1
Interesting i have a 400f5.6 which may be of the oldest vintage, non APO ... but it works fine with my 7D and 9, but fails on my 7. i do believe the issue is mechanical, not electronic: the hole that accepts the focus drive screw is a teensy small and may well block some. By a little reaming it should work fine. Love it to bits:-) It is SO tidy and small - 72mm filter thread builtin hood & tripod mount. No focus hold button. chris_harley1
Peter is it possible for you to not write your replies with spaces between every sentence? It makes it very annoying to move past your post.Every post you make is like a page long when it could be a small paragraph.
ivan_dzo
Chris, well said about Peter's posts. They sometimes have some good content but I end up losing the will to live whilst reading them and seldom reach the end! Sometimes less is more.... kin_lau
There's 2 models of the Sigma 400/5.6, the older one has the 72mm filter and the newer one having 77mm filter. I have the newer 77mm one in EOS mount and it's nice sharp lens. Unfortunately, you cannot rechip these lenses for new cameras, they've been out of production too long. You could try taping off a few of the contacts to see it that will "fool" the camera into working with the lens.
