zoltan_kovacs
Dear All, could somebody tell me, how does Jupiter-9 85/2 lens work on 505si (HTsi)? You can buy it app. for 100 EUR, and productor says, that aperture priority mode works with it. So, can I set the aperture on the camera body, and does it work fine? Any experience? Thanks! yuriy_tsibizov
No, you will set aperture on lens. Jupiter is M42 mount lens and it will work only with M42 to Minolta A adapter. And Jupiter-9 costs about 35 euro (1230 roubles), M42 to Minolta AF adapter is 17 euro (600 roubles) in Moscow...
yeow_teng_kuah
You will need a M42 --> Minolta AF mount adapter for the jupiter-9 85/2 lens to work with a Minolta AF body. It is a preset aperture. The body will not sense the aperture size since there is no contact between the body and the lens. You cannot set the aperture on the camera body, but only on the ring of the lens.
zoltan_kovacs
Ok., and do I need use manual exposure mode? I set the shutter speed on the camera, and the aperture on the lens AND the camera, and shoot? How can I meter the light?
yuriy_tsibizov
Your camera may work in aperture-priority mode. Just set desired aperture on lens, half-press shutter button and camera should calculate shutter speed for you. In manual mode you set aperture on lens and shutter speed on camera. You will not be able to set aperture on camera (it should show you "--").
zoltan_kovacs
I understand. The body sees the aperture via adapter.
yuriy_tsibizov
No, body does not know about numeric value of aperture. M42 to Minolta A adapter is just a piece of metal.
zoltan_kovacs
And how does calculate the camera, if it doesn't see the aperture???: "Just set desired aperture on lens, half-press shutter button and camera should calculate shutter speed for you." yuriy_tsibizov
because when you set aperture on lens it will close aperture and lessen amount of light coming on camera meter. When aperture is already closed, camera can calculate shutter speed required to expose film with light coming through lens.
yuriy_tsibizov
you can search on "stopped down metering" on google to get more information....
bacsa
actually, it will suck. You will close down your aperture to the value you want to use beforehand (thus it's not the camera that will close it down for the moment of exposure),therefore the viewfinder will be much dimmer -unless you use it at wide apertures... kin_lau
For Csab, The J9 is probably best used in the f2 - f4 range anyhow, for this portrait lense, and f4 is still brighter than most zooms. If you have a zoom that's better than f4 @ 85mm, then you probably don't need the J9 :). For Zoltan, 100 euro is a little much for this lense, but it's very nice for portraits. Keep in mind that you'll need to set a special function for the 505si to fire with this lense or non-Maxxum lense. Check back in the archives here for the sequence you need for your camera.
