Nikon Wednesday 2015: #16

This photo of a house finch was taken a couple of days ago while trying to learn how to use a long lens (the Nikon 800 mm with the 1,4x TC; D810 on a good quality tripod). The distance was 100-110 feet. I used a remote trigger so as not to jog the camera but with this lens almost any movement is perceptible in the viewfinder, even the slightest of breezes. In the end I found that manual focus was best. It was a little like using a microscope. The smallest of turns of the focusing ring move objects completely in or out of focus at that distance. It will take a lot of practice to get used to using this lens.

00dFd8-556424184.jpg.addbcae50d7f1a4bef1ef8537e437cad.jpg

Not much photography this week. It's been rainy and gray, and my poor little D3200 does not like the rain. I did get out yesterday for a brief bout of sunshine and while not getting the pileated woodpeckers I was after I did notice some water striders, and was amused by the visible surface tension of the ditch water.

00dFdF-556424284.JPG.335361c3fe0dd8e757313664f1dc4b33.JPG

A trip to a camera fair resulted in the acquisition of a low lighting stand and a reflector "spider", as shown below. Total cost £13 UK (about $20 US).
I was going for a 1950s heavily retouched advertising shot look.
Tech data: D800 + 50mm f/1.2 @ f/11. Lit by a monolight in a small softbox.

00dFdp-556425684.jpg.2c8eb8c0c5f29bdf22f4b994d72f6c43.jpg

Recently visited another steam railway near London. This rusted hulk was sitting in the nearby back ground rusting away, never to blow steam again. Pity, she was very big and once very proud.
D700, iso800, 1/160, f/13, 75mm on the 24-85

Andrew

That looks like Finnish Hr1 class 2-8-2 number 1060 at Ongar, on the Epping-Ongar railway, at least according to the data I can find. It's not clear what they are going to do with it, since it is the wrong gauge (line and loading) for standard UK railways - and a major restoration to boot!

Nice image toning, BTW - very atmospheric.

Thank you Peter, and you are absolutely spot on with all your observations. This one is visible only because the guys in

the signal box invited me up, and its behind the main platform and not very visible normally. There is another one, in not so bad state,

which I may post if you like. Have you been there ? May go this weekend again as i see on their website there will be

some more visiting locomotives.
