chip_chipowski

The total length (distance from camera lens mount flange when the lens is retracted) is approximately 16.5 mm shorter, the maximum diameter is approximately 2.5 mm smaller, and the lens weighs approximately 35 g less than the AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6G IF-ED.

Not very glamorous, but this is a great update for Nikon. I used to have the 55-200VR and I thought it was a great value. If they can keep the optical quality in this collapsing design, this lens makes good sense for Nikon. Making the entry level DX kit nice and compact is a good thing I think.
dan_brown4
The MTF curves on this lens look very good.
mike_halliwell
Indeed they do. A nice lightweight walk-around partner with a 'standard' zoom...17/18mm>>55/70mm.

I'd hope the IQ was better than the equivalent, and more expensive, single lens, the 18-200mm...?
Matthew Currie
What is not made clear in the intro is whether, like the retractable update of the 18-55, this one also has come up with a non-rotating front element. The 55-300 and the older 18-55 rotate, and I am guessing from the hood provided on the older 55-200 it probably does too. One thing I have missed on the otherwise decent cheap zooms is the ability to autofocus with a polarizer.
chip_chipowski
The previous 55-200VR also had a non-rotating front element. I agree - nice touch.
arthur_smith1
Really overpriced for what essentially is a slow aperture zoom with mostly plastic construction. VR, or VRII, does not replace a fast aperture. Nothing does.
dan_brown4
You could just as easily state that a fast aperture does not replace VR. Nothing does.
vrankin
Arthur, I believe I'm now getting better images from those cheaper/slower kit zooms (18-55 VR II, 55-200 VR) since Nikon has come out with great low light results from Expeed 4.
