Bought a used 7D - how to clear all custom settings/functions?

Hi everyone, I recently purchased a used 7D and the previous owner had created a number of custom button mappings that I would like to revert back to their original state...for example, pressing the shutter halfway does not engage the autofocus, instead I have to press a button on the back to focus the camera. I watched a video on youtube that explains how to do the "clear all camera settings" option and I tried this but it didn't seem to do anything because the shutter still won't focus...is there a way I can revert all the button settings to the way they would have been when the camera was brand new? Thanks for any help!

Okay I will avoid the screaming to be said, 'Doesn't anyone RTFM anymore', and instead ask if anyone actually looks at their menus on these cameras/
Like any Custom Function, you can always return the camera back to factory-default operation by returning that Custom Function to option “zero”, or returning the Custom Controls C.Fn for the shutter button, AF-ON, and/or AEL button to the first of each button's available options.

@ Jake. lol. Old School. ;-) Let's give Paul a cordial Photo.net welcome and give him the benefit of the doubt. He may not have the manual or know where to get it and is very new to Canon DSLRs. This is one of the purposes of the forum. We have visitors to the site at all levels from newbie to pro. Though we do encourage folks to read the manual. I will provide helpful links so you can download the manual if you don't have it, Paul.

Canon was very innovative introducing the camera reset to factory default feature to the 7D. You have a very advanced awesome camera there Paul. Canon has introduced a lot of cool features on this model and it is the top of the line in the Canon crop sensor class of cameras. It's a real stellar camera for sports, action and wild life and great all around camera.

Step 1 - Turn the camera on. This is done by sliding the lever from a left to right direction, from the off position to the on position. The lever is located on the top left side of the camera, If this fails, check to make sure you have a charged battery in the camera.

Step 2 - Press the [Menu] Button located in the back upper left area of the camera.

Step 3 - Scroll over to the third settings sub menu indicated by a wrench and three dots. To scroll; turn the dial located on the top front right of the camera.

Step 4 - Scroll down on the sub menu to [Clear all Camera Settings] using the Quick Control Dial. This looks like a large circle on the back of the camera to the right of the LCD screen. Once Clear all Camera Settings is highlighted press (SET) the button located in the center of the back Quick Control Dial.

Step 5 - Using the Quick Control Dial scroll the setting to [OK]. Press (SET).

If you followed these steps your camera has been reset to factory default settings just as if you opened it new from the box.

Thanks everyone for your help, I managed to fix it. I tried the Clear All Camera Settings a few more times but that still didn't work...I had to go into the Custom Functions menu and there's an option to clear all of those - that did the trick!

I'm intrigued by the idea of having separate buttons to control exposure vs focus, but I'll admit that I don't fully understand what the benefits of doing this would be...can you explain how that would work? Sorry, I'm certainly no expert.

And now you're resetting the body it is a good time to check the firmware version as well and update it to the latest version if that's not been done already. Instructions to do so can be found in the manual.
And put you name or copyright tag into the EXIF information (use the Canon software for this).

Manual readers are approaching retirement age and soon to be extinct! It's been well over a decade since I observed regular manual and textbook reading in my classes. Most younger folk were raised on "multimedia" learning and require video and/or direct hands-on instruction. Manual reading will soon go the way of email, CDs, VHS and cassette tapes...

if the "Clear all custom functions" command doesn't work as Marked detailed above, you need a PRAM reset: pull mains and clock battery and let set a spell.

Sometimes the light’s all shining on me. Other times I can barely see.
