Sony A7R ?

Hi Tina, I have the Sony A7R. I got it to replace a few different cameras I previously used for weddings: (Sony A900 and Leica M9). This is possible because the A7/A7R can take a number of different lens systems with appropriate adapters.

I already have a Full Frame 24 meg Sony A99 wedding camera, so I chose the A7R for the additional resolution. The additional 12 meg allows most any cropping I may want to do in post … and/or the files need not be enlarged as much as those from the A99 (same 24 meg resolution as the A7). I do full 12" X 18" album spreads from it on a regular basis.

The A7R has very good levels of high ISO performance owing to the dynamic range which is similar to that of the Nikon D800 (also a 36 meg Sony sensor). Very highly touted sensor by DXO and the like. Plus, they do not have to be enlarged as much as my 24 meg camera, which mitigates the appearance of noise in an image.

I have nicknamed my A7R "Mighty Mouse".

All that said, there are few caveats: The body is tiny, but the Sony flashes are not, which makes for an ubalanced package. There are not many Sony full frame AF FE lenses for it yet because it is a whole new system. It'll take a little while for the system to mature, and for third party accessories to become available.

Meanwhile, my A99 is not going anywhere until then.

- Marc

I bought the regular A7 and sold it soon afterwards. (I shot a bit with the A7R as well.) I didn't really like the interface and the lens selection was slim, to say the least. I ended up using it with manual focus glass, and got some decent results, like this and <a href=" Sony A7, Voigtlander 35mm Color-Skopar 2.5 (Ended up buying an M9, which is a different beast altogether obviously.)
I grabbed the new Fuji XT1 when it came out. I vastly prefer the files out it over the Fuji, the skin tones are amazing. Plus it is more stripped down and intuitive, with old school dials instead of tons of menus. The kicker is the killer lens selection they have for XT1, especially the super-fast primes. I would happily use it in conjunction with the M9 to shoot a wedding. Maybe rent an A7R and give a go to check it out.
