Im visiting Garda from April 11-14th 2014. I'm looking

for good vantage points. I heard malcesine, sirmione

and torri del benaco are nice. However I'm not sure of

exact locations. Im only there for a weekend so what to

make of the most of sunset and sunrise.

Looking for great views of the lakes/ mountains and

beautiful architecture.

Also is there anywhere indoor for taking pictures at noon

when sun is too high for outdoor shoot?

Id really appreciate help with locations and

how to get there and when.

Im staying at maderno but have a car.

I really appreciate any help!

It is some years now since I spent a week or so around Lake Garda. We were staying above Limone sul Garda in Tremosine. Just a few names have stuck in the memory. I remember some of the best lake views were to be found along the amazing roads climbing up from the west side of the lake. These are worth exploring and the more bendy they look on the map, the more fun they are to drive, though perhaps not for the faint-hearted. There are several Youtube videos of these roads which you can find under 'Tremosine roads' or some such. You may be able to find locations from these.
Monte Baldo has a cable car starting at Malcesine which is fun though the panoramic lake views are mostly on the way up and down. You will need a clear day for this.
I seem to remember Simione is interesting for its ancient architecture. Have a good trip!

I really like Sirmione as well. The castle is fun to climb around, and ruins of the Roman villa are also good. The Griffone restaurant that is next to the castle is very good. We've eaten there a couple times now, on 2 different trips, and it was good each time.

Also, the town of Desenzano del Garda is quite nice. If the sun gets too bright just go sit under the portico (visible in the far background of the photo below) and have something to eat or drink. There is a bakery there that is quite good. The hotel and restaurant Alessi are very good, and in a great location.

1) The road on the Western side ("Riva Bresciana") where you are staying is indeed highly spectacular. However Malcesine (with the cable car to have a splendid way from high up) is on the Eastern side. It is certainly possible to make a complete tour, but this takes time.
2) Sirmione becomes unbelievably crowded on week-ends and other holidays, and apart from having to literally elbow your way out in its narrow streets, it is quite normal having to wait for up to an hour or more for space becoming available in its small parking lot. I would strong recommend not going there in Saturday/Sunday, or if you have to then go by boat.
3) A rather weird but rather interesting place to visit indoor is the "Vittoriale", the villa of the late poet and writer Gabriele d'Annunzio in Gardone (a few km south from Maderno). You will have to at least read something about him to place the house and its content in proper context.
4) Riva, at the lake's northermost tip is a charming little town, with a very different atmosphere than the other villages around the lake. It was part of the Austrian-Hungarian empire until WW1, and it still shows.
