photomarche
All,

I was shooting outdoor with the D800 in live view few days ago.

The release cable stopped working at some point, and I realized that it had one of the inner cables broken. I therefore switch to the auto-timer mode. However the camera would stop displaying the shot taken on the screen after each shot, despite the "Image Review" option on the menu set to On. No feedback at all.

I manually pressed the "Lv" button however the camera would not switch to and from the live view mode. The LV screen remained off.

I switched off the camera, changed the battery, removed and inserted again he memory card but nothing improved. I finally removed the release cable from the camera and switched off/on again. At this point, everything got back to normal behaviour (LV mode and image review). I have been using the camera since without issues, also trying different release cables.

It looks like the issue is related to the cable release being broken and still connected to the camera... who knows!

I am annoyed about what happened, I am not sure if I should take the camera to the Nikon center because the problem is not re-occurring. What are they going to fix?

Did you have a similar experience? somehow, I did not expect to have this problem on a pro-camera.

Thanks
ilkka_nissila
If the cable release such as the MC-30 is pressed and held in the depressed position by the long exposure lock, the camera will not work until the lock is released. This happens to me by accident sometimes. If it's not the lock, then it's just a broken cable release. I've tried some cheap MC-30 substitutes and their construction quality is terrible in my experience.
photomarche
The cable must have "locked" the camera than.... and yes, I am using a cheap MC-30 substitute.
ShunCheung
If the camera gets back to normal after you had removed the cable, apparently that cable is damaged and there is some kind of short circuit inside.

If all you need is to dampen the effect of the mirror slap, you can always set exposure delay for 1, 2, or 3 seconds. That is controlled by Custom Setting group D.
photomarche
Thanks Shun for your answer, I now think the camera is ok and I will replace the cable.
