Continuous video lighting for my photo studio soft boxes?

Recommended Posts

As a former still photographer I own a Calumet 750 Travelite kit: 3 strobes with softboxes & stands.
I'm getting into HD DSLR video production for woodworking tutorials and my calumet lights are failing (some circuitry problem). What inexpensive lighting source would you recommend and how could I get it to work with my current lighting tripods and softboxes? I see tungstun (like my strobe's modeling lamps), flourescent, LED, etc. I need something really creatively inexpensive.

Thanks in advance!!!

You might want to try something like the Westcott spiderlites that can accept either fluorescent or tungsten light bulbs. Unfortunately, the ones that pump out a good amount of light (i.e., at least 1,000 watt equiv.) are not inexpensive. The tungsten bulbs may be too hot for the softboxes you are using, but the fluorescent should be ok, depending on the dimensions of the softbox. You may need an adapter to attach your softbox to the spiderlite.

I realize these may be too expensive for your situation but I found this ARRI LED light demo interesting in how different continuous LED lighting brands can affect skin tone in digital video.

Thought it would be an interesting FYI. I know I've been wondering about the affects on color rendering from various continuous lighting brands even for still photography.
