rishabh_jain
I wanted to purchase a 50 mm AF D lens for my nikon D3200. Will autofocus work with this lens. Also how much would be the image cropping. Should i go for 50 mm G lens ?
nathansanborn
The D lenses will not autofocus on your D3200, so you will want the lenses marked AF-S (silent wave motor). Almost all of the G lenses are AF-S and will autofocus with your camera.
Andrew Garrard
Hi Rishabh. No, an 50mm AF-D won't autofocus on a D3200, which has no autofocus motor to turn the screw drive in the lens. A 50mm AF-S, which has the motor in the lens, WILL autofocus with a D3200. If you are looking at an f/1.4 lens (as opposed to the cheaper f/1.8), also consider the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 HSM. The cropping is a feature of the camera: like all non-"FX" Nikon DSLRs, the lens will be cropped by 1.5x compared will an FX or film camera, having the field of view of a 75mm lens on an FX or film camera. Note that the same applies to any kit lens you may have with your camera: the 50mm prime will behave like an 18-55 set to 50mm, except that it has the ability to be set to a wider aperture. I hope that helps.

Wouter Willemse
To echo what Andrew wrote - but I think the 50mm f/1.8G is really the nicest choice (the Sigma is good, but a lot larger and more expensive). Apart from solving the lack of autofocus, the 50 f/1.8G is easily worth the extra money over the 50 f/1.8D - it's really a lot better.

As for cropping, an alternative solution to "calculating" the crop: forget it about it, completely. As Andrew wrote: "the 50mm prime will behave like an 18-55 set to 50mm" - this is completely, 100% true, in all possible cases. 50mm is 50mm is 50mm, not matter which camera you put it on.
So, assuming you have the 18-55 kitlens, you can see for yourself what a 50mm lens 'looks like' on your camera. No need to do calculations :-)
