resizing d800 files with LR4

Recommended Posts

With my previous cameras including the d7000 I could

export jpg to 10%-80% and the files had no problem

uploading to my WordPress site. I have tried 10% with the

d800 files but they are still too big with my theme. What

would be the ideal way to resize a photo for export within

light room as far as dimensions go so that they are not

distorted or pixelated and should I sharpen for screen?

Thanks

Are you resizing on export, or just using the Quality slider?

Size them according to the pixel size you use on your WordPress site. The quality setting is up to you, I use 50, 60, 80 or 100 depending on the photo and use (for the web, it wouldn't be 100).

50 and 60 are tradeoffs between subsampling vs. compression artifacts. 50 uses 4:2:0 with very low compression, while 60 uses 4:4:4 (no subsampling) with lots of compression. Both will result in very similar file sizes. Use 80 if you just don't want to deal with the tradeoff; it uses 4:4:4 with even less compression than 50, but of course the files will be bigger. (I apologize if I got too technical there...)

Yes, sharpen for screen. Choose the sharpening setting (low/medium/high) to taste; see how they look and decide what you like.

Technical info is great. Thanks for the response.

Previously I only needed to lower the quality to 80% so that

the pictures would display properly. The hosting site allows

max 8mb files. The theme width max is 650.

I'll leave the quality at 80% and adjust to 650 width and max 1440px. Is there a

better way at getting the exported image to look normal such as figuring out how to resize it.

Right, just resize to 650 pixels wide, leave the quality at 80%, and all will be well.

In fact, all will be better than before -- your files will upload more quickly and image quality will be better because export sharpening will be more effective and because Lightroom is doing the resizing rather than Wordpress or the browser. If Wordpress wasn't resizing for you, then performance will also be better for your readers.

Jesus, the fact that you can upload 8MB photos does not mean you should. Some people (including me) are on slow internet connections, and basically would leave your site pretty much right away because the photos do not load. So when Mark said "performance will be better", maybe good to add that bad performing website loose visitors. The rule is about 3 to 5 seconds, and people start leaving.

So, if your theme is 650px wide, make your photos 650px wide. Not "1440 max", because all those extra pixels serve no use whatsoever (except consuming bandwidth). If you feel the viewer really should have a larger view, make the 650px wide image a link to the full size image (either full screen or a lightbox). The viewer can then select to view larger, and will be more accepting that the download time is a lot longer.

I have resized to 80% quality and 650x434 and so far so

good on my end. The gallery upload was 90% faster so that

was a plus for me. Plus it will be better putting those files

on my mobile device so that itself is another plus.

With my previous theme and files there was not the same

restrictions which to my lack of info I thought everything

was fine but now I see that it wasn't. I'm glad that loading is

better because I do agree that slow loading times are

frustrating but I couldn't figure out why until I uploaded the

D800 files. My galleries are completed now I need to re-

upload the posts and and the main page gallery. Slow

process but I'll get it done. Feel free to test out the loading if

you check my profile you can find the link to my site. The

galleries are done for the moment. I don't have slow internet

so I can't test until next week at a known slow internet

location. I'm thankful for everybody's input.
