Nikon D7000 Firmware Update

I had noticed a forum post on this subject a couple of weeks ago and updated the firmware on my Nikon D7000. It seems a little strange that Nikon doesn't notify registered owners of these updates - I certainly receive e-mails of Nikon's sale promotions, etc. on a regular basis.

Mr. Cloud, you make a valid and interesting point. So let me ask those who participate in this forum from Europe and Asia, is the same thing true where you live? Does Nikon notify you of updates, or is it left to the customers to discover the updates on their own?

Same for me. Altough I have installed this "Nikon Message Center" (which usually comes along with the software distributed with the cameras - like ViewNX, etc.). You can invoke it from ViewNX Menu: Help -> search for updates.
You might check under Preferences of Nikon Message Center when it should show notifications "When to notify" - if you only ask for notifications after operating system login you might not get notifications in case you seldom reboot.
And: you might check under Preferences whether (and which) firmware updates are shown.
But: interestingly, even after manual update of notifications it does not show latest Firmware Updates on my list (latest entry is from January only). So, there seems to be also some issue on Nikon side...

Nikon has had this notification problem for years. To this day I've never received any kind of update notification even though I've registered 3 DSLR's and have Capture NX2. Even when an update for NX2 is announced if you go to help/check for updates it usually returns a notice none are available. Then if you go directly to the website you'll be able to download the update. This happens with View NX also.

Firmware updates... such an odd thing. I looked at this update for the D7000 but as far as what they've shared with the public, there doesn't seem to be much reason to install it. It adds what, support for one new Nikon lens? If the update said something about having fixed minor issues or improved reliability or ANYTHING else then it would make sense to download and install it, but for this one lens? There's more risk than benefit.

Patrick S: The firmware update does more than adding the lens correction for the new Nikon 800mm lens. Here's what it says on the Nikon USA website:

Support for the AF-S NIKKOR 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR has been added.

Modifications enabled with this upgrade of firmware, release date November 10, 2011

An error where the card may not have been recognized when some memory cards were used has been addressed.

The following issues occurred when the mode dial was rotated from U1 or U2 to another shooting mode or from another shooting mode to U1 or U2 when the power was off or when the exposure meters are off (Auto meter-off). These issues were resolved.

A new folder is sometimes created despite the fact that the current folder does not yet contain 999 files and none of the files are numbered “9999”.

The number of remaining exposures may not be displayed as specified in the settings.

The setting for Role played by card in Slot 2 may change between Overflow, Backup, and RAW Slot 1- JPEG Slot 2.

An issue where Battery info in the setup menu sometimes showed sufficient remaining charge even when the remaining charge for the AA batteries inserted in the MB-D11 battery pack was low has been resolved.

An issue where a saved photo may not have been displayed properly when a movie was displayed in playback mode while saving the photo has been resolved.

An issue where zoom in or zoom out may not have performed properly when the playback zoom in or playback zoom out button was pressed while in Live view has been resolved.

The message displayed when the internal memory of the Wireless Transmitter WT-4 is formatted from the Format transmitter's memory under Device settings in Wireless transmitter of the camera’s setup menu was changed from Done to Built-in memory formatted.

The message displayed when the internal memory of the Wireless Transmitter WT-4 is formatted from the Format transmitter's memoryunder Device settings in Wireless transmitter of the camera’s setup menu was changed from Done to Built-in memory formatted.

I downloaded the firmware update and installed it on my D7000 with no issues. Haven't had a chance to try out the lens correction with the new 800mm lens yet (Ha! That's one lens I'm probably not going to add anytime soon... $17,896.95 is a bit above my current lens budget!).

I would generally have a personal tendency to download any firmware updates that Nikon releases, but that's me.

I would try the routine again. First to format the memory card in the camera. Then download the update to the card from the computer onto the card. Then insert the card in the camera and go to the setup menu "Firmware Version". You likely have done this already. If so, and the second try doesn't work, I don't know the answer.

I've tried repeatedly to download the D-7000's new firmware. I can download it with no problem but it is a zipped Bin-Hex file and I cannot get them open. I've talked to Nikon and Apple, both are sympathetic but have no solution. Has anyone had this problem? If you have solved it please share your methodology.

If you read the very explicit directions on the download page you'll find that you do not open the files. They are used directly by the camera in their downloaded form. Print out the install instructions and follow them EXACTLY and your install should go with no problems. - https://support.nikonusa.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/18287/session/L2F2LzEvdGltZS8xMzc0ODExNTg3L3NpZC9oRVJOUzh3bA%3D%3D
