ted_marcus1
I have been using the Tonal Contrast filter in Nik Color Efex 3 for some time. I just took advantage of Google's free upgrade to the new Nik Collection, which includes Color Efex 4.

The Tonal Contrast tool in version 4 seems entirely different from version 3, and not in a good way. Version 3 is somewhat like the Clarity slider in Camera Raw or the Clarify tool in Paint Shop Pro. The midtone slider increases local contrast while the highlight and shadow sliders bring out details in their respective tones. It's a very useful tool.

Version 4 seems merely to increase contrast. And the highlight and shadow sliders decrease detail and make their respective tones block up. The detail enhancement those sliders used to provide seems to have been moved to the new Detail Extractor filter.

The on-line documentation is very pretty, but it's of very little help in explaining the options, including the "Contrast Type" pulldown options. So does anyone know how (or if it's possible) to make Tonal Contrast version 4 work the way it did in version 3?
