sam_clay
Fabulous lens. I got it for my birthday. Quality excelkwnt...great bokeh and wide at 1.8. I have heard that the 1.4 which costs a fortune is not that much better. great lens...buy it !!

daverhaas
I have it and use it for portraits a lot on my D700... can't say how it will do on a D800, but if the 700 is any indicator it will be fine. Bokeh is excellant IMHO.
chris_brandt1
I also use it, but on a D600. It's my main lens. You'll love it.
ShunCheung
I reviewed the 85mm/f1.8 AF-S for photo.net a few months ago, based on a test sample we received from Nikon USA: http://www.photo.net/equipment/nikon/lenses/85mm-f1.8-g-af-s/review/
I have a number of images captured with that lens, mainly on the D800, in this folder: http://www.photo.net/photodb/folder?folder_id=1033179
There are also a few images of the lens.

Subsequently I bought one for myself, so I have experience with two samples of that lens. Since I bought one with my own money after testing one, that should tell you whether I like it or not.

I captured the attached image last night in a very dim restaurant. The 85mm/f1.8 AF-S was wide open at f1.8 and the D800E was set to ISO 3200. I was hand holding at 1/40 sec and with such high ISO, I wouldn't bother to look for extreme sharpness.

oskar_ojala
Short version: it works as advertised, image quality is excellent.
Longer version: the image quality holds up well even at the widest aperture and bokeh is quite nice. In terms of image quality, the only real issue is that it can flare it certain situations, but that's not very common. In terms of handling it's fairly good and AF works well, but it's a bit large with the hood attached and the hood is a cheap plastic type. But these are basically specific details for specific uses; for a general evaluation, the lens is excellent.
lwg
It's one of my favorite lenses on the D800E. Good wide open. Nice bokeh. Sharp with excellent contrast and color. I wish all lenses were this good.

zhang_wei2
The Nikon AF-S 85mm f/1.8G is a very fine lens for the D800. Size, weight, ergonomics, autofocus, sharpness, contrast and bokeh are all great. Resolving power on a D800 is very high. There's some CA though, but that can be fixed in post processing. Not sure about the sour smell of the rubber on the focus ring (smell your fingers after you held it). I don't believe the expensive f/1.4G version will give you better image quality. This 85mm f/1.8G is one of the best performing affordable Nikon lenses. I think it makes a nice combo with a fast 28mm or 35mm lens.
