iPad2 Tethering and CF card reader?

Recommended Posts

First time in the Digital Darkroom forum. I have two questions. Although my questions are for the the iPad2 this would apply also to anyone with any iPad including the first iPad and later iPad generation models iPad3...ect.
1)Can the iPad be used for tethering during a photo shoot? I would rather use my iPad2 than a laptop because:

a) Its lighter in weight and easier to carry than a laptop especially outdoors.
b) Touchscreen.
c) It looks pretty darn slick and professional compared to a bulky laptop. (Sorry I am biased toward Apple computer products they are the best IMO for photography/graphics. No offense to PC users.) :D

2) Where can I find a CF card reader for the iPad2? Apple makes a Apple camera connection kit BUT it does NOT read CF cards (only the SD card). Why Apple did this is beyond me. Any third party brands anyone can recommend?
I only found this 3rd party iPad/CF card reader and it was tested to be OK for most CF cards but I do not know anyone personally that has used it:

There are two ways to connect a camera or card that work with the Camera Connection Kit:

1. SD card, or
2. Camera connected via USB.

Connecting a card reader via USB and inserting a card into it works erratically. I found that some cards worked, and some didn't. With the newest iOS version, this even may be disallowed. NOT a good idea!

I know nothing about third party substitutes for the Camera Connection Kit, not even whether they exist.

Know nothing about EyeFi, but that's a wireless approach, so the restrictions of the Camera Connection Kit don't apply.

Photojojo has a CF card reader for the IPad as well as some pretty reasonably priced other goodies. First one wouldn't

accept a card (alignment problem). They quickly replaced it with one that has worked well. I too am interested in

tethered shooting. Has anyone found an app for the iPad that would be similar to LR's tethered shooting?

 • 2 weeks later...

OK I finally got the Apple Camera Connection Kit and here are the pros and cons:
Pro: It works perfectly as long a digital camera is connected to it or there are camera photos straight from the camera on the SD card.

Cons: You CAN NOT transfer the photos via a SD card after they have been resaved, retouched or altered in PS. It only allows camera photos pretty much straight out of your digital camera. If you resave in PS even with all the exif info on the photo the iPad2 will NOT read the photo on the card! As long as you dont use PS you can transfer the photos from your computer to the SD card...go figure. :/

Tethering is NOT possible yet with this kit. After you finish shooting it will read all you photos but only after the shoot not during.
