mhahn Posted January 4, 2013 Posted January 4, 2013
The critique forum categories could use an overhaul. For instance, there isn't a category for candid shots. Why not? Not all pictures of people fall into the "portrait" category. As a matter of fact, most don't.

michaellinder Posted January 7, 2013 Posted January 7, 2013
Martin, I agree with you on this 100%.

joshroot Posted January 7, 2013 Posted January 7, 2013
Agreed. They all need to be redone.

Ideally, I'd like to not have critique categories at all and just have image categories that people put stuff into when uploading. Then the critique category would just be whatever category you had chosen when uploading.

Doubly ideally, I'd like to have a subject (pets, nudes, sports, etc) AND a technique (b/w, film, HDR, etc) category.

Norma Desmond Posted January 7, 2013 Posted January 7, 2013
<<<just have image categories that people put stuff into when uploading>>>

I BEG YOU not to do this.

Many of our photos don't fit well into categories. It's bad enough to have to categorize them when asking for critique . . . and I understand the need for this to keep things orderly. But we should be able to upload photos to our portfolios free of a categorization. Often a photo straddles several categorizations and to have to pick one is to put an often unnecessary and unwanted spin on a photo. Again, doing this for critique can be daunting enough, but I get the organizational rationale. Insisting on it within the privacy of our portfolios would be a very constraining and unnecessary move.

I agree that the categories need reworking.
We didn't need dialogue. We had faces!
mhahn Posted January 7, 2013 Author Posted January 7, 2013
I wasn't exactly sure what you were proposing, Josh, but I agree with Fred. Photo Net members should be able to create and name folders in their portfolio as they wish.

michaellinder Posted January 7, 2013 Posted January 7, 2013
I tend to think that there probably aren't enough categories to "house" all of the images PNers post. For this reason, I think Fred's suggestion works the best. For example, this would allow me to post an image as a "cityscape."

kenb Posted January 13, 2013 Posted January 13, 2013
As a fan of B&W (mono) photography , I feel that a category for mono would be useful.
