Photos with banding, discoloration. Could it be corrupt memory card, or 7D issues?

Hi,
I just downloaded some photos onto two Mac computers and, while the photos look fine in my 7D LCD screen, on the Macs they are discolored and have strange banding and split-screen effects.
Could it be a corrupt memory card? (This one is a Transcend 32 gb, bought around Oct. 2012.) Or, god forbid, an issue with my new, used 7D?

I'd so appreciate any input.
Thank you very much.
Margo

How are you downloading the images?

Best method is via a card reader attached to your computer. Downloading from the camera via USB can sometimes be a problem.

If they look OK when magnified on the 7D screen, the images are probably OK. Not 100% sure if the "full frame" image displayed on the screen is the actual image or a downsized thumbnail that's stored along with the full image, but the magnified image has to be taken from the actual full size image file.

Obviously it's also worth trying a different CF card if you have one.

Thank you, Bob! I appreciate your help.
I just magnified the images on the 7D screen, and they look fine. So, perhaps the picture files are ok after all. That's a relief.
I used a new card reader--perhaps that is the issue. I'll get another one tomorrow, as well as a new CF card.
Sarah, I may have used too high a shutter speed, but I didn't use flash. That strange cast to the picture just somehow happened in the download process--the original photo doesn't look like that. Weird, huh? Thanks for the idea, though (I have made that shutter speed/flash mistake plenty of times!).
All the best, and thank you both again.

Margo, I had the same problem yesterday. Images were downloaded onto my iMac using a card reader as usual, but one image had similar banding to yours. It was fine in the camera, as was the thumbnail on the computer. So I deleted that image from the computer and downloaded that image again. This time it was fine, so I guess something went wrong in the first downloading.

I'd agree that this most likely occurred in the transfer from memory card -> computer. I would try again to see if the results are the same first. This 'type' of flaw in jpegs is often caused by a momentary error/ missed bits during the transfer because (for efficiency) a jpeg's image data is essentially composed of the change in colors from one pixel to the next, so an error, or misread causes the copy to show mostly the same image details, but often in a shifted color (or brightness), or position. Your image shows both, the positional shift and color shift indicate there is likely a bad connection somewhere in the reader or cord, and perhaps that continuity is even positional (a reason I make it a point not to move cards/wires while copying).

If the problem repeatedly occurs, change the reader, or cord, or both first.

FWIW: I have seen more issues with images downloaded via a card reader than directly from the camera. In fact I have never had any problems downloading directly from the camera but more than one card reader failed me which sometimes resulted in corrupted files. Yes, while D/L form the camera there is also a chance that the USB cable and/or USB port on either end my be faulty but that's easy to diagnose.

1. Are you seeing the issue with both memory cards? If issue shows up on multiple memory card - then you have an might have an issue in the camera, but look below If it only shows up in one memory card, you have an issue with that memory card, and you can skip the other options below.
2. Are you recording in the camera as jpg or in raw mode?
3. If you record in jpg, it sounds like a problem within the camera
4. If you record in raw - does the issues show up within all raw converter apps? Check to see if there's a newer version of the converter app, or an update to cover your camera raw images.

This same problem has plagued me for months. FINALLY I figured out what the cause was, at least in my situation. Having my printer plugged into one of the USB ports at the same time of transferring photos from camera (or SD card in card reader) is what corrupted my images. When I unplugged my printer, everything worked fine. I could use my camera with USB cable or SD card plugged directly into the reader. I knew it wasn't a problem with the SD card, my camera or my camera's USB cable because the photos transferred fine on another computer. Try systematically disconnecting other USB devices to see if that might be the issue for you --- but do it systematically, just disconnect one device, then try the camera import, until you've tried all devices. Doing it one at a time helps you know which other device is causing the conflict (if any). In your case, it might be some other problem. Good luck.
