I have a leaf aptus ii ( 5 ) 22mp digital back. Which Hasselblad bodies will it fit?

Hello,

I'm having quite a bit of trouble getting a straight answer about something. I've acquired a leaf aptus ii ( 5 ) 22mp Digital back that I am in the process of selling. I was told by the previous owner that he used it with an H2 body. He said the back wouldn't work with an H1 body. I found out later that the H2 body he used, was in fact, an H1 body that had been upgraded to an H2 body.

He had told me that the leaf aptus would work with all the other H series bodies except for the H1.

But I called mamiya/leaf yesterday and spoke with their technical department and the gentleman I got on the phone told me that the back I have would only work on the H1 and H2 bodies which is contrary to what the former owner told me.

So I come here to ask you guys who have actually used the leaf aptus ii 5 and on which H series bodies you've used it with? And has anyone used the aptus ii 5 on a V series body and if so......how?

Also, the leaf website says this particular back is compatible with H and V series (not including 200 and 2000 versions). http://www.mamiyaleaf.com/products_aptus25.asp

Yet the technical person I spoke with yesterday said that they aren't. I asked him if there were adapters so that I could use this aptus ii 5 on v series Hasselblad bodies and he said no. So either he is confused about his own products or I have completely misunderstood him.

Here are photos of what I have so I will be very grateful for any help. I certainly dont want to misrepresent what this back is compatible with and have my buyer upset at me for wasting his/her time.

I just can't get a straight answer on this.

thanks, Ken

AFAIK, Hasselblad has 'closed' their system and attempted (as far as I know, successfully) to prevent their newer cameras (H3, H4, and H5) from working with non-Hasselblad backs. 'You want to use our current camera and lenses, you need to buy our back!' That strikes me as a reason to go with the Mamiya / Leaf / Schneider 645 AF system, but of course I'm not a pro and I'm not invested in H-system lenses.

AFAIK an H-mount digital back (Leaf or other) will work on an H1, an H2, or an H4x. I believe that Aptus-II 5 backs (and other Leaf backs) are made in both H-mount and V-mount versions, so in that sense the back is compatible with both Hasselblad series. My understanding is that the backs' mounts can be changed, e.g. from H to V, but that the conversion costs several thousand dollars, so it is not usually considered very practical.

Ken, there's no confusion on his part. It is compatible with both H and V series; but it's not adaptable or switchable between them. Perhaps Leaf's product info could be more explicit that you make that platform choice up front, V or H, when you purchase the back. That's what they mean by compatible. Got a V camera? You'll get a V-dedicated Aptus 22. Got a H camera? You'll get a H-dedicated Aptus 22. Compatible, but not switchable.

It is the norm for the bulk of the interchangeable-back digital market that platform mount swaps are either expensive or impossible. (Phase One, for example, have an expensive "mount swap" option...but what they really do is take your old back and give you a different back in the other mount you wanted!). Only Sinar and older Imacon/Hasselblad CF backs have truly interchangeable platform adapters.

Dave, Ross, and Ray,

I really appreciate your responses and I see now that there was no confusion on the Leaf/Mamiya tech representatives part but, rather, on my part. My public apology to him for my misunderstanding.

So in summary this back only works with the H1 and H2 kits. Got it.

I read that it does not work with the H4x because of this thread here:
http://forum.getdpi.com/forum/gear-fs-wtb/35978-fs-new-h4x.html

So I'll post for the H1 and H2 and thank you guys again so much for helping me. I very much appreciate it.

blessings,
Ken

Ken,
Your back should also work with an H3 if the H3 is an upgraded H2.
Another precision (unrelated to your question): not only on the H3, H4, H5 you cannot use a non Hasselblad back, but you cannot even use a different Hasselblad back. Even worse, you cannot even replace a back by another one of the same size. Shame on Hasselblad.
