Lousiana River Road

I'm planning on visiting Louisiana's River Road between Baton Rouge and New Orleans next week. Plan on visiting plantation homes and small towns along the way. I would appreciate any insight from those who have visited, or live there, of things not to miss, or perhaps to deliberately miss. Thanks for your help.

Louisiana is a beautiful place. I lived in the central part of the state for a few years.
I always enjoyed going to Jean Lafitte National Historic Park and was partial to the Barataria Unit. This is south of NO. I have no idea what happened to this area during, or since, Katrina, so check with the NPS.
Don't miss local food. Have a great trip. Are you a birder? If so, take your binocs.

Gary, one more thing, just in case it's not already on your list of things to see and places to go. When in New Orleans, go to Cafe Du Monde for coffee and beignets. It's on Jackson Square. This is an incredibly touristy thing to do, but going to NO and missing Cafe Du Monde would be akin to going to Yellowstone and missing the geysers. Spend a couple of hours there and just soak up the experience.

It's been a long time since I lived in Baton Rouge, but let's see, Oak Alley is something most people want to see, quite beauiful. Carville, the old leprosy house is south of Baton Rouge. I used to bike south of BR and there were ruins here and there, but it was mostly open cattle country, not too much on the road directly south of BR.
