mhahn Posted October 18, 2012 Posted October 18, 2012
I started with an Olympus raw file that I opened in Adobe Camera Raw, which I then worked on in Photoshop and saved as a TIF file. Now I want to resave it as a jpg file, but the file types included in the "save as" dialogue box don't include the jpg file type (there's a much shorter list of file types, as a matter of fact).

Perhaps I inadvertently changed a setting or something like that in Photoshop.

If anyone has any ideas, please let me know.

Thanks.

geoffs1 Posted October 18, 2012 Posted October 18, 2012
I'll bet you are in 16-bit/channel mode. JPEG only handles a-bit.

mhahn Posted October 18, 2012 Author Posted October 18, 2012
You are exactly right. Thank you very much.

Martin

digitaldog Posted October 19, 2012 Posted October 19, 2012
No longer an issue in CS6. JPEG is available for Save for Web and plain old Save, it will sample down to 8-bits per color then save for you. Another JDI (Just Do It) feature Adobe has been adding.
Author “Color Management for Photographers" & "Photoshop CC Color Management" (pluralsight.com)
mhahn Posted October 19, 2012 Author Posted October 19, 2012
Although if I had that feature, I might have been forever ignorant of this aspect of RAW conversion. I think I prefer it the way it is now.

digitaldog Posted October 19, 2012 Posted October 19, 2012
What's a raw got to do with it? You may have started with raw but in Photoshop, it was a 16-bit unsaved doc (so it could be a TIFF) or it was saved as a TIFF prior.
The new design is one thing less to think about and do. JPEG can't be saved in 16-bit so when asking to do so, CS6 just does one step for you prior to the save to new format.
Author “Color Management for Photographers" & "Photoshop CC Color Management" (pluralsight.com)
