<p>Hello All - I've looked thru the different threads trying to find something definitive that clarifies whether there's an optical difference between the AI and the AIS versions. Some say no, some say yes, others allude to a possible coating difference or focus throw distance. Does anyone know for sure if there's an acutal difference(s). Thanks in advance.</p>

<p>The basic optical formula is the same, I think, but there may well have been coating improvements over time. The focus throw is definitely shorter in the AI-S version -- only 180 degrees, compared to 215 degrees for the older AI model.</p>

<p>What matters is the optics are the same, and Ai are built slightly better than Ai-s. Don't fret about the coatings; both types are multicoated. Regardless, a matching hood should be used.</p>
