picturesque
I am continuing the theme assignment in this week's POW. I may even change the title, but not right away. This week's theme is Details. So post your most creative or interesting photos of those scene setting items.

Make sure it is 700 pixels or less in width and/or length - AND - make sure to enter a caption in the caption box on that page where you've uploaded. Some details about the shot would be helpful.

This is not a contest - but simply a discussion of art and technique, with illustrations. Positive as well as constructive suggestions are what will occur. HOWEVER - IF you wish to post your image but DO NOT WANT to be considered for critique - please say so in your caption. Images that show as a link will be deleted and you'll be asked to re-post.

Newcomers and Pros are both welcome to post in this thread. You can start discussing immediately. ;-)

jose_rivera9
Here is a detail shot of one of the smaller cakes at a Quinceanera I did in May. The mother was upset because the cake decorator misspelled her daughters name (Tiffany) and the cake did not look anything like the one she ordered. I did my best to show of the cakes without letting anyone see the mistakes. Here is a close up of one of the smaller cakes.

Dave Gardner
This was shot just before they turned up the lights. I just loved the window light streaming through...the venue was surrounded with windows.

j_guiles
Flowers are always fun. I sometimes move tables/objects to get the lighting to my liking

fuccisphotos
Since this is supposed to be a discussion as well as a posting of work I'll do my best to give a lil critique of each.
Nascar Charlie: really fun cake! But the white balance seems off enough to make the white and black checkered flag effect look more pink and black. I doubt mr. nascar groom wants it to look pink. The highlights on the edge seem blown and there seems to be a filter on the shadows that kind of muddies them up for me. Cool cake, but I think I would have executed the shot very differently. Maybe you were trying to give it a sense of motion though???

Jose, too bad about the misnaming on the cake. With stuff like that sometimes I try to fix it in photoshop and it means a lot to the families. I think it could have done with some more depth of field around the butterflies on the small cake and some use of a cloning tool to take out where the cake seems to have been scraped by something on the edge.

Mark Anthony, I like it, but maybe a little dark. But perhaps the prep area was very dark, and you want to bring back that feeling to it? But there is a good lot of clipping in the blacks so I would have brought my exposure up. I like the other shoe in the background and the composition.

J Guiles, very well executed. I don't think I'd change a thing.

Marc, I'm a dog person, so I can't not LOVE this shot. Wish the little guy was looking either up at her or more in your direction, but as we know with children and pets, directing them is NOT very easy, and we take what we can get. =)

fotografz
Vail ... You mean like this ... and this? :-)

I chose the more melancholy one because the little one knew something was up and was really clingy and needy ... LOL!

I'm very patient with kids and animals. My wife calls me Dr. Dolittle.

ejder
Posted on another photography forum for critique (and the single response was scathing), I figure I have nothing to lose by posting it here.

5D mark II
50L, some aperture between f/1.2 and f/2
Shutter speed and ISO fast enough to avoid camera shake or motion blur. I don't have the EXIF data because the original file isn't on this pc.

This shot is in the context of a post-wedding session and the groom is the prop used to cover part of her face. She had exceptional eyes, and her front profile looked great from this perspective and with this amount of cover. With any photo, seeing the whole face isn't necessarily going to give the best impression of the person's facade every time.

I'm no good at captions.
