sam_portera
Does anyone know anything about an M6 that just has "M6" inscribed on the front not the usual "Leica M6". Saw it on the auction site. peter_l_ck
Samuel, Leica started like this the M6. Peter
paul hart
Early models of the M6 were produced with just 'M6' on the front; the word 'Leica' was added later, but I've no idea at what point. The M7 has started in the same way, but I don't know whether they will add on the unnecessary 'Leica' (given that it's but an inch or two away from the good 'ol red dot). sal dimarco
Paul, The first M6s were engraved Leica M6 with the M6 under the word Leica. The shift happened sometime later in production. I THINK, but am not sure, the change came when Leica moved its plant from Wetzlar to Solms. Happy Snaps,
christoph_frick1
Somebody else had "M6" reserved already, so Leica was forced to change the product name to "Leica M6" (after the first couple of bodies have been produced) -- and probably quickly reserved "M7", maybe also "M8" etc.... to avoid such trouble in the future. roger c
According to Rogliatti, it was done when the red spot changed from "Leitz" to "Leica" (following the company's official name change). Leica thought having their name appear *twice* on the front of the camera would look a bit daft, so they just used "M6". Later they reconsidered and put the LEICA back on. hoyin_lee1
The "just M6" marking happened somewhere in the middle of the production, and not at the beginning. What Roger said was probably the real story behind the marking variations. Stephen Gandy's Cameraquest site has an article comparing early and late production M6s: http://www.cameraquest.com/m6dif.htm
eliot
The plain large M6 engraving was just one of the many variations of the M6 camera. It was not an early variation but occurred later. You can consult Lager's book (Vol I, Cameras) or Stephen Gandy's site to see some of the other variations (eg., absence of strap protectors and rubber around eyecup on early cameras, "Panda" and "reverse Panda" varieties, red dot with Leitz vs Leica, etc., etc.). bishop_vc
Speaking of early M6s, here's another interesting M6 auction which has some relevance to this discussion: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1942157007 Check out the engraving on the front of the top plate.
