ernest1
I have a single SB-600 flash (will getting a second later)

Will a 45" umbrella be too big for a single light portrait setup?
maury_cohen
The only reason I can think of that might suggest that 45" is too large would be if you're working within limited spaces.
ernest1
Space wont be an issue at all I just wasnt sure if it would spread the light a little too much for one flash unit. Im just starting out with off camera lighting obviously :)
richardsperry
45" is fine. I would suggest a shoot through, and that has the back covered in black. I think they are called umbrella softboxes. I like the little pop out softbox too. They both fold down pretty small and are inexpensive.
michael_madio
40"-45" is a good general purpose size. As mentioned by Richard, getting a translucent one with black removable back makes it quite versatile. For something with even more versatility look at the 46" Photek Softlighter.
ernest1
Thanks for the advice, I ended up with a 45" translucent with the black backing. So far I love it, just going to be a lot of trial and error learning how to use it properly! Lots of reading to do tonight!
